Windows xp sp2 won't shut down - freezes

I recently installed sp2 and as a result my pc will not shut down - just
freezes at the "saving your settings" screen. I've seen references to a fix
kb307274 which is available via the windows update but to access the fix you
need to reconfigure how windows update appears by clicking Personalize
Windows Update at the left, and then Enable the Windows Update Catalog. But I
don't have this personalize option available. I've downloaded all recommended
updates but this hasn't fixed the problem.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
