In the instructions from the link that was provided it states "Under Value
Data.
Add BITS and WUAUSERV to the list of services." What if you do not have this
string? "Value Data", which key does one add? There are 5 different strings 2
of which cannot be used.

I also was not sure how to approach the BITS and WUAUSERV instructions, so
thanks!
When I ran the regsvr32 processes, 5 of them showed "not found":
wuapi.dll, wups.dll, wuaueng1.dll, wuweb.dll, wucltui.dll.
Is that part of my problem?
Currently, things I have done (these instructions and others), have gotten
Windows Update to go on further, but stops at an error message of 0x800C0008,
saying my system date and time are incorrect (they are not).

0x800c0008 error message

When checking your date (including the year) and time, also check the Internet Time.
Double click on the date/time in the notification/system tray area, select Internet
Time Tab and then select update now. If it’s not already checked, check automatically
synchronize with an Internet Time Server – WinXP. Also check your Time Zone.

NB: SteveL question about BITS and WUAUSERV instructions were answered in his other
posting under "Checking for Windows Updates".
