Why does Windows XP take such a long time (sometimes) copying or deleting
AVI files?

I have one that is 350 MB, nothing else is running. Sometimes when I try to
move it or another folder from within Windows Explorer, it may take several
seconds before XP even acknowledges your request. Even then, it may takes
seveal more seconds to get the job done. Why?

Err... how long is the piece of string? AVI files take no longer than any
other type of file extension on any of my PCs. I've copied, moved and
deleted AVI files up to 66gb in size.

How much hard drive free space is left?
When did you last defrag?
How much RAM does your PC have?
What is the CPU speed?

etc etc

Maybe it's a defrag problem.

I have about 50 GB free space, 512 MB RAM, a 2.53 GHz Intel P4 machine.

I just assumed moving any file to another area on your hard disk is a simple
file table index update problem, so it should be very fast. Actually
copying a file to another area, I can understand, depends on the file size -
i.e., the actual copying. But it seems in my situation, the OS takes quite
a while to figure something out before actually starting the copying or
moving procedure.
