Looks like spell checker doesn't really spell check when in Reply, or
Forward mode. (Maybe other modes, too, don't know.) Is there any way to
make it find my spelling errors when I am entering my text in a
Reply/Fwd/etc. doc?

Select the text and hit F7.

Highlight the interspersed text wit ur curser > Tools > Speling
