Trouble connecting to news groups

Kate
07-09-2005, 11:32 PM
I use Outlook Express 6, an ADSL router, Windows XP Home, and I
regularly download Windows Updates.

About nine times out of ten, when I click a newsgroup I subscribe to,
I get the following message :

"Would you like to go offline?
No connection to the Internet is currently available. To view
Internet content that has been saved on your computer, click Work
Offline. Click Try Again to attempt to connect."

If I click Try Again, I get connected. I know that I am online, as I
can send and receive emails and connect to Internet Explorer. This is
a fairly recent problem and, although minor, it is, nevertheless,
irritating. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and how to
correct it, please?

Many thanks
Kate

Kate, try - OE>tools>accounts>news>select each news account in
turn>properties>connection>remove checkmark from always connect using>apply.
OE will now use any available connection.
If not, post back.

Firstly, thank you for the replies.

Steve : I checked in Tools/Accounts/News and "Use any available
connection" is the selected option already.

I also tried the remedies given in the links P A Bear gave. I looked
in Add/Remove programs and couldn`t find Explorer. However, if I
right-click the connection icon in the Systray, I get the option to
repair, which I have tried on many occasions, but it has not solved
the problem permanently. I also checked Registry and both "LoadSens"
and "LoadLCE" are set to auto. I have tried deleting Temporary
Internet files, Cookies and History but it hasn`t made any difference.

As I mentioned originally, occasionally the message doesn`t appear,
and I have tried to work out if there is a particular circumstance
when it connects OK, but there doesn`t seem to be a pattern.

Is there anything else I could try, please?

Hi Kate :-)

OE says you’re working off line but you’re not:

I had this problem a few months ago, and after some 3 days of
troubleshooting, here is what solved the problem for me (I also have a
router, and XP Pro):

This is only if everything is set to static, it won't work (I don't think)
well if it is set to auto:

I finally had to turn off the DNS and DCHP services as follows (your file
locations may differ in the Home edition):

DNS -

My Computer>Services and Applications>Services>DNS Client
Set Startup to Manual
Set Service Status to Stopped

DCHP -

My Computer>Services and Applications>Services>DCHP Client
Set Startup to Manual
Set Service Status to Stopped

This is the only thing that finally resolved the problem for me, so you
might try it and see if it will work with your situation.

Hope this helps.

Jan :)

Thanks for that, Jan. However, OE doesn`t seem to say that I am
working offline exactly - rather, it keeps asking me if I _want_ to go
offline! Does that make any difference? Also, could you explain what
you mean when you say "This is only if everything is set to static, it
won't work (I don't think) well if it is set to auto", please?

Thanks again

What I mean by static is that, I have specific settings for my needs as I
don't have a laptop or other types of equipment or devices that may need
certain allowances that I need to consider. I don't need the services I
have listed here, so these settings pose no problem otherwise. You can
check the Internet or the mfg. website for your particular router needs for
specific information on the different settings you may need to allow for
based upon your particular requirements. .

I do still periodically get this message, when I have set my Zone Alarm to
"Stop all Internet activity", which I do now and then when I will be away
from the computer for a while and don't want any "unknown" activity taking
place. When I first reopen my OE and click the SendReceive, as it processes
down the list of e-mail accesses I have a dialog box will come up with
Working off line at the top with a Work Offline, or Try again button at the
bottom. I simply click the Try Again and it completes the download process
and that is the last time I see it. As I am not an expert with routers and
such connections, so perhaps my explanation is not as concise as it should
be, but, hopefully, you will be able to get the gist, and perhaps someone
else here who is much more experienced will be able to explain it more
clearly.

However, there may also be a Power Management conflict, so you might also
look at the following and check these settings and see if it will help:

Power Management adjustments to stop connection loss

Start>Settings> Control Panel>Network and Dial-up Connections>Local Area
Connection>Properties>Configure>Power Management tab>UNcheck “Allow the
computer to turn off this device to save power.”

Hope this helps.

Hallo, Jan
I tried stopping the DCHP service and couldn`t connect at all, so had
to restart it, but I have stopped DNS Client, as you suggested, and it
seems (so far) to have done the trick. However, I am a bit concerned
that I may have now compromised some necessary service. Do you know
what the DNS Client does, please, in perhaps more comprehensible terms
than it is described in Services and Applications/Services?

Thank you for your help.

As I stated earlier, I am not an expert with DNS, I read many, many articles
on the problem and the two services before making any changes, and the fact
that because of my personal computer needs (i.e., no network, not laptop
usage or other types of devices that would require dynamic connectivity, I
was able to stop these services with no adverse impact and it resolved the
problem. If you have no specific needs for dynamic access, then I would not
see a problem with stopping the DNS setting as you have it now if it has
resolved your problem. However, should you at any time experience any
problems with using other devices that may require a different access, then
you can simply restore the DNS service.

Use the program as is for a few days and work your system normally. If you
don't experience any problems, then I would not think you have any problems
to worry about at this point.

I have researched some articles in the DNS and will post them here for you
to review if you wish. As I said, you can at any time restore the service
with no adverse affects to your system. Check the information here and see
if it helps. You can also check with your ISP for additional information on
your particular system, and the router mfg. website.

What is DNS and how does it work?

Jan,

DNS Client is also called the dnscache service.

<title>How to Disable Client-Side DNS Caching in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003</title>

(MSN search for
dnscache site:microsoft.com
)

I had a look at the links you posted and got to thinking that perhaps
I do need the DNS service. So, last night, I re-set it to "automatic"
and started it again and, much to my surprise, haven`t had that
irritating message since. It might be too soon to start celebrating,
of course, but it does look as though stopping and then re-starting
the service has cleared the problem. So, many thanks for your efforts
on my behalf, Jan!

Best wishes
Kate

You're very welcome! Glad to hear you were able to resolve your problem.
Good job!

Thank you very much for posting back and letting us know what worked for
you, and for the benefit of other readers who might have a similar problem.

Great! Thank you so much for the additional information on this. Some of
this stuff often seems like Algebra to me...kinda hard to get my head
around. You always seem to find a way to switch the bulb on. <g>

I am having the same exact problem. It is with Newsgroups. All has been
fine until a few days ago and I got this same problem. I checked out the
replies and did as they have said and it doesn't seem to be helping.

Anyone have any other ideas?

I have ran Spysweeper, Ad-aware, Spy-bot and MS beta spyware plus Norton
2005 with them all updated and they fine nothing.

Thanks,
Ed.

Please start your own thread with a better symptom description.

If you had read and understood this one which it turns out
actually had next to nothing to do with the implied Subject
you wouldn't just be posting: "exact problem. It is with newsgroups."
