Alternate Text for In-line Images

When sending e-mail to a recipient who views only plain text messages, any
alternate text for in-line images is supposed to appear in the body of the
message. This doesn't happen with the e-mails I've been sending from OE.
Is this normal? Could the installation be corrupted?

How does your copy of the message look in Sent Items, Michael Ray?

My message looks beautiful, just as I composed it. Mousing over the image
causes the alternate text to appear.

Please include all of previous message in your replies to the newsgroup.

Your response tells me that the problem isn't on your end. Is the recipient
also using OE6 in WinXP SP2?

There's probably two problems here. First, I think one has to set the
option to always expand alt images under Tools | Internet Options | Advanced
in IE. Second, OE is by default set to be in the restricted zone, so any
user with default settings will not see the mouseover effect, as scripting
is blocked in the restricted zone.

So any recipient will have to have those options enabled to view your
message as you intended.

Thanks for that. I don't think I've ever run into this before, Steve.

No. One recipient is on a Mac. Another is using some corporate e-mail
client set to receive plain text only.

My problem isn't with the recipient seeing the mouseover effect. There
isn't anything to mouse over in a plain text message.

My problem is that alternate text doesn't appear in the plain text portion
of the message. It's my impression that it should. Am I mistaken?
Alternate text appears in messages sent using Mozilla Thunderbird.

Again, the problem isn't on your end, Michael Ray. If the recipients would
post to this thread (or to a newsgroup specific to the mail client they're
using), perhaps someone might be able to help them.

I beg to differ. The problem is with OE not putting the alternate text in
the plain text portion of the e-mail. If it doesn't get sent, the recipient
can't see it.

Perhaps I was confused as to the question. The HTML copy in my "Sent Items"
looks fine. If I look at the message source, though, I see no alternate
text in the plain text section.

Plain text messages don't have embedded images. So there is no "alt" for
the image when its plain text. An image then is simply an attachment and
you can't set the alt for an attachment. Try a CTRL-F3 on the message and
you'll see that the image is not referenced in the message at all in a plain
text message, its only attached and there is no way to specify an alt in
such a message.

What's the purpose of alternate text if it isn't to give plain text
recipients something in place of the images? Mozilla Thunderbird implements
this quite well. Use alternate text under your images in Thunderbird
messages, and plain text recipients see the text where the images would
otherwise be.

The alt tag for images requires an <IMG> element. See
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/author/dhtml/reference/objects/img.asp.

If you don't have an HTML message, then you don't have an IMG element to
have an alt attribute.

I have no idea on how other email clients handle things. I just know that
in a plain text message in OE, there is a lack of HTML elements (that's why
its called plain text), so you can't embed images in the messages, and for
sure you can't give those images attributes.
