Backing up my messages onto a cd and reopening them

I know how to backup my folders, messages, and address book in Outlook
Express and then restore them to my hard drive if I redo my pc. What I'm
wanting to know is this:

Is there a way that I can backup my folders with my messages to a cd or dvd
and then when I want to access them, just open up the particular folder in
Outlook Express and not reimport the messages? What I'm wanting to do is
keep my messages and folders on a cd and then delete all the messages from
the folders on my hard drive to clear up space. Then if I need to find a
message in the future, I'd like to be able to insert the cd and access the
folders, search on the messages, and open up a particular email; all without
reimporting them to my hard drive.

Thanks for your help!

Create a folder on your Desktop, then in Outlook Express open the folder
with the messages you want to save. Highlight one message, then Ctrl+A will
highlight them all, (or hold the Ctrl button down while you select only the
messages you want), Now, drag and drop them to the folder on your Desktop.
(Easiest if the folder shortcut is on the Taskbar).

Now you can copy that folder to a CD and you will be able to read the
messages on the CD by double-clicking on them.

Thanks! Will I also be able to utilize the search function in Outlook
Express on that CD?

Actually, I have never done this, but I don't believe the search function
will work. However, you can create more than one folder on the Desktop and
separate messages that way. All folders can be copied to the same CD. With
different folder names, finding an e-mail shouldn't be hard.

To be able to view messages on the CD without restoring to OE, you need to convert to EML
files which is one message per file. These can be opened directly from the CD.

EML files are text files. And the file name is the message subject.

You'll find one of these programs use for the EML conversion:
DBXtract - http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx
DBXpress - http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx
DBXtend - http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtend/Default.aspx

OEX Enhancements - Import/Export/Resend/Duplicates/Attachments, etc.

DbxConv - DBX to MBOX/EML converter by Ulrich Krebs

Hi Michael:

No need to convert to EML. I just tried what I suggested to make sure I
wasn't getting CRS and it works fine.

Did you notice that the messages you saved to the desk top got saved as EML files?

The drag-and-drop method for creating EML files (or NWS files from news posts) works fine
provided you don't have multiple messages with the same subject. That's because the
subject is used as the file name.

Depending on the version of OE, it will automatically append a sequence number when a
duplicate would occur in the same drag-and-drop action. The first message gets no
sequence number, the second one gets "(1)", the third one "(2)"., etc. XP SP2 does this.
But if you later try to save additional messages to the same folder with the same subject,
it starts over with the sequence numbers (first one none, second one (2), etc.). You get
an overwrite warning on this. There is a workaround to rename the previously saved
messages, but that gets tedious. That's why I suggested the utilities for DBX to EML
conversion which automatically handle the duplicates.

I didn't have the problem occur at all. The method that Bruce described
worked perfectly for me and there were several thousand emails that I copied
to folders and then burned onto a CD.

Actually, when I check the properties of a message, the type of file is not
listed anyplace that I can see. But you are correct about the numbering.

This was the way I was taught by my mentors. I'll work on your suggestion
for the future.

The problem only occurs if you have multiple messages with the same subject AND you do the
drag-and-drop in multiple operations.

For example, say you have 3 messages with the subject "XYZ". When you drag-and-drop them,
they will get the file names
XYZ.eml
XYZ (1).eml
XYZ (2).eml

You later get a 4th message with the same subject and drag-and-drop to the same Windows
folder. OE will want to save it with the file name XYZ.eml and warn about overwriting the
first saved message.

This is just something to be aware of.
