Can't Retrieve Stored Emails

Hope someone can help here -
I added a larger volume hard drive, but before I did I backed my older HD up
completely onto a Maxtor peripheral storage unit. There were quite a number
of emails on that older, smaller unit. Now that my new boot drive is
functional, I wanted to go into the older slave drive to retrieve my wife's
stored emails.

Now Windows XP won't allow me access to the critical directory: D:\Docs &
Settings\Bob Pfeifer\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{9E924EC2-49C2-4287-BA78-9517568AB72A}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express.

Even more frustrating is the fact that this string isn't found on my new
boot drive. The "Identities" segment only exists on the old slave drive, and
I can't access it. A popup of "Access Denied" says so.

How can I retrieve those files? They should be on my Maxtor backup unit,
but I "restored" the OE stuff to the slave, and I can't get at it.

(What's this "Access Denied" stuff all about anyway?)

You need to import the email into OE.
File, Import, Messages, Microsoft OE 6, Store folder, point to the D: drive
files.
In OE, Tools, Options, Maintenance tab, Store folder button.

Plug in the older hard drive, and find the DBX files in the folder you
mention and copy them to a local folder on your new hard drive. Then remove
the old hard drive and open Outlook Express, selecting
File/Import/Messages/OE6/From a Message Store and point to the folder you
saved all of the old DBX files to.

Ron: It may be more complicated than that. He may need to take "ownership"
of the files and folders first since the error message is "access denied".

To take ownership of the file / folder . See this KB article.
How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q308421

To do this you have to disable "simple file sharing" and how to do that is
on THIS page.

Also review these two KB articles to resolve the "access denied" problem
with the old drive:

Also see www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx and the last paragraph there to import
individual dbx files.
