To box autocomplete

Hello,
Can anyone tell me why as I enter a name in the To box the autocomplete does not use alphabetical order? For example, I have several contacts that start with T, such as Tarah, Todd, Tim and Tom. When I type "T " in the To box, the auto complete puts in Tom H . . ., until I type more, even though there are other "T" contacts alphabetically ahead of that one and even other "Tom's" ahead of that one.

Bob Brannon

I *believe* it is choosing alphabetically by the e-mail address, not the
Display name. i.e. If Tom H's address is Harper@xxx.xxx and Tarah's address
is Tarah@xxx.xxx it is choosing Harper before Tarah.

Not true for me...I just tested. Putting S brings up Sue. Her email addy
is wormald@xxx.xxx
My first listing for S is Sath. Her email addy is sathtastic@xxx.xxx
(I just keep typing until I get the correct one!)

The only other possibilities are:
They go by what address was added first,
Or:
It's Outlook Express. What did you expect? <G>

I haven't been able to find anything definitive on this. It's not
alphabetical and it isn't in the order they were added to the Address Book.
The person that wrote the program for OE would know, but I think he changed
his name and moved to South America.

Hint: OP's handle was pudge
Hmm... Actually I think he missed part of my point.
<quote>
To see your problem try exporting your Address book in .CSV format,
then open that file in Notepad (or Excel if you have it) and see if all
of the Name field values (fourth field) are enclosed in double quotes.
If they are it means that each entry in your Address book has a comma
in its display value (e.g. for showing last name before first name.)
Another alternative would be that the values for the last name
and first name fields are interchanged and so the display name
appears backwards. Etc.
</quote>
Do you have an example of your problem?
Have you created the .CSV dump of the address book
for the particular view that is currently in use and tried to analyse
your problem symptoms using it?
Robert

I don't have a problem for myself. I checked the link you provided, but I
fail to see where it explains how AutoComplete decides which address is
first when you start typing the address. It isn't alpha by Display, or real
address. Nor is it by when the address was added. I personally don't care,
but would like to give the OP an answer.

Hello,
I am still watching the threads above this one in this same issue, but wanted to let you know something. Look at my thread on "mass address change", for some reason, using that process fixed the autocomplete problem I was having. Problem is that doesn't get at the crux of the problem, for anyone else or if it should arise again for me.

You're still not giving us an example of the problem.
Another case, which wouldn't show up in a .CSV exported Address book,
would be if names from groups are being matched.

The example is at the beginning of this thread, the message I started it with.
That example illustrates the issue, in this case, is not the matching of a group name.

I tried your suggestion of exporting my address book. (I did keep the old one before trying Kuay's suggestion from my "mass address
change" thread.) Looking at it in Excel the Name field does not have quotes, nor are the last and first names reversed.
</QP>
You're still not giving us an example of the problem.
Another case, which wouldn't show up in a .CSV exported Address book,
would be if names from groups are being matched.

Do you have an example of your problem?
Have you created the .CSV dump of the address book
for the particular view that is currently in use and tried to analyse
your problem symptoms using it?

The example is at the beginning of this thread, the message I started it with.
That example illustrates the issue, in this case, is not the matching of a group name.

Ok. So now you're saying that you do not have any group names
which start with T? What T's do you see in the .CSV file, in order?

Again, the first one that comes up when I type "T" in the To: box is Tom Holland. Not the first "T", nor even the first "Tom"
