OE6 Compacting Folders

Is there a way to prevent OE6 spontaneously compacting folders and deleting
messages?
Either I'm missing something obvious but I can't find an option in
Tools/Options/Maintenance to control how and when messages are deleted.
Even when I click on Cancel during the compaction it does not seem to have
any effect.
Thanks

You should let it do it. Canceling it, or worse, ticking the "do not show
this again" box can cause message loss. It cannot be disabled and will
appear every 100th time you close OE.
Do not store messages in any of the default folders such as Deleted Items,
Sent Items, Drafts or Inbox. Create new folders as sub folders to Local
Folders for storage. Never let a folder get over 100MB. You should also
continually back up your OE in case this happens again.

I started using OLE 6 SP2 for the first time just recently and I checked the
"do not show this message box again" option without thinking it through.
Offhand, is there a way to re-enable it?

OK - appreciate it and thanks.

Replace the Compact Prompt:
Go to: Start>Run>Regedit>Enter and follow this path:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook
Express\5.0\Don't Show Dialogs.
In the right pane right click on the appropriate entry and choose Delete.

If I let it run, will it physically delete the messages or just
compress/compact the files but still leave them available?
Thanks

I have let it do its thing about ten times with no problems. However, I back
up constantly and OE is always the last thing that I close. I never store
messages in the default folders such as Sent Items, Deleted Items or Inbox.

It won't delete the messages as long as you don't touch anything until it
stops. It is akin to Defragging. Just get rid of wasted space.
For the future, I highly recommend OETool.
Steve Cochran has added a button in his new version of OE Tool
that will not only Compact All Folders, but at the same time,
resets the "Compact Check Count" to zero whenever you compact
manually. You will see the prompt again if you do not compact
before 100 closings.

It is still advised to check Work Offline before you compact.

Thanks for the advice. I'll check out OETool.

They really blundered with this in SP2. You also need to backup frequently
to prevent OE from trashing your messages automatically.
Get OEQB with OETool and you can backup with a click of a button just prior
to compacting all, to ensure that you don't lose the messages due to OE's
lousy programming.
