Sent folder

I am running XP Pro and Grisoft AVG w/ MSFT firewall on. AVG is updated
daily and scans daily for viruses.
I just noticed that emails I sent for about the past three days are not
being transferred to my sent folder although they are being received by the
addressees. (Receipt confirmed separately by phone.)
I set up a different identity and everything seems ok, i.e. the sent folder
displays transmitted emails as usual.
Since I have tons of emails in my main identity I prefer to solve this
problem within this area rather than trying to import everything to a new
identity, possibly really getting confused and lose this info.
Any suggestions on how to restore the Sent folder to its normal function
within main identity would be greatly appreciated.
Also I have used OE and the main identity exclusively for the past 15 years
and have never experienced this problem. Does it happen frequently and/or
did I do something to cause this?
Thanks for your help

First, make sure the Save a copy to Sent Items folder was not unchecked. If
it is still checked, the Sent Items folder is corrupted. Move any mail you
wish to save to a local folder you create. Then:
Tools>Options>Maintenance>Store folder will reveal the location
of your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder
location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start>Run>Ctrl+V will put the location
in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write the
location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.
In WindowsXP & 2K, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start>Control Panel>Folder
Options>View.
With OE closed, find the DBX file for the folder in
question {Sent Items.dbx} and delete it. A new one will be created
automatically when you open OE.
Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually
become corrupted. Create your own user defined folders for storing
mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly.
Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as
is feasible.
After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually
while working *offline* and do it often.
Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File>Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status
Bar).
File>Folder>Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting
is completed.

Have you tried Tools>Options>Send tab>ensure "Save Copy of Sent messages
in the 'Sent Items' Folder" is checked? HTH, s

Bruce, thanks very much for your comprehensive reply that included the cause
of the problem. The step-by-step solution worked to a "T," but I have lots
of clean up to do in both the local and default folders.
Best regards,

Thanks for the info Bruce - my Win Pro 2000 started exhibiting the
same OE "sent items" problem this morning - and went through the
save box check on/off & re-boot without success. Do have over 100Meg
in some of the OE files, will cull/delete.

Hi Bruce:
Followed the procedure, deleted the ’Sent Items’ file, restarted OE
and a new empty ’Sent Items’ opened, transferred the ’Sent Items’ file
back to the new file and tested - result as before, sent items not
being copied to ’Sent Items’ file? Any other suggestions please?

Hi Bruce:
Feel like an idiot - the "Sent Items" problem occurred after I was
checking something on the June calendar and inadvertently reset in
June, not July. Problem now corrected.
Again, thanks for the info (had 63 Meg only in my ’Sent Items’ folder,
the largest file on this OE).
