problems using AOL with Outlook Express & retaining password

I'm trying to help a friend of mine with her e-mail set-up. She has two
e-mail accounts that she uses, an sbcglobal.net account and an aol.com
account. She uses Outlook Express to send/receive from the sbcglobal.net
account and the AOL software to access her AOL e-mail. I think it would
simplify things if she could use Outlook Express for both. I added her AOL
account in OE, and it receives mail just fine, but for some reason sending
e-mail from the AOL account doesn't work. I get an error message that says:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'imap.aol.com', Server:
'smtp.aol.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error:
10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Any ideas on what the problem might be or how to fix it? She'd prefer to
use her AOL account for sending some mail, so switching over completely to
the sbcglobal.net is not an option. I checked the Microsoft website and
followed the instructions there, including changing the outgoing mail port
to 587, but that hasn't fixed the problem.

Another issue she's having with both her AOL and sbcglobal.net accounts is
that the passwords are not being retained consistently. Sometimes clicking
send/receive works fine, other times it prompts her for her password, even
though "save password" is checked. Any ideas on what the problem might be?
I'll mention that her password for both accounts is the same. It doesn't
seem likely to me that that's the problem, but perhaps I'm wrong.

Any help you can provide would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Is she connected via AOL when she tries to send AOL mail? I'm guessing she's connected
via SBC which blocks port 25 to external SMTP mail servers. But SBC should allow 587. I
suspect you get a different error message with 587.

Double check her settings here:

As for the password problems, does that clear up on its own? Intermittent password
errors can be the fault of the mail server.
