OE 6 fails to download messages for only one newsgroup

I am baffled and need some help. I regularly use 8 newsgroups in OE 6.
Until last week (Win XP Pro SP2 install), everything was fine.

Now, there is one newsgroup that fails to download any messages (other than
2 from 6/14). I have unsubscribed, deleted the dbx file, and resubscribed -
all to no avail. I've searched for similar circumstances, and can't find a
match for this.

Does anyone have any explanation that can help me out?

The NG that fails for me is bit.listserv.ibm-main.

Thanks!

Larry

RESET the newsgroup. You can do that by Right clicking the newsgroup in the Folder list,
selecting Properties and Local File. That sets the newsgroup in OE as if it has never
been visited. Neither unsubscribing nor deleting a newsgroup does that.

Also, with the newsgroup selected, look at View, Current View and make sure that you are
hiding any messages.

Mike,

Thanks for the reply.

Done and done - no change - only two messages are displayed. The NG count
is 16236 - if I pull down 300 headers, the number decreases, but nothing
else changes.

I'm open to any other suggestions/explanations.

Try unchecking the Tools, Options, Read, Get 300 headers at a time. This will let OE try
to download everything. There probably aren't 16,236 messages and OE is trying to
download non-existent messages. If you try the get next 300 messages 55 times, you would
probably get to the real messages. But removing the limit will be quicker.

The message count is just an estimate until all headers have been downloaded. It can be
wildly off.

Michael,

I tried that, and waited about an hour while everything got downloaded.
Sure enough, there were a few days' worth of new messages.

I then compacted the file on my machine - big mistake.

It seems - at least for me - that a combination of Win XP SP2 and OE 6 is
lethal to any "listserv" NG - it is simply no longer going to function
correctly.

Time for me to find another news reader...

Did you compact via OE Tools > Options > Maintenance > Clean Up Messages?

Are any options checked/enabled on that tab under 'When compacting
messages'?

No, I right-clicked the folder.

For the option you mentioned, I have "delete after 5 days" checked.

Going to start using Thunderbird...

OE 6 fails to download messages for only one newsgroup
