Writing Japanese

I currently can read and post in Japanese using MS IME.
This requires multiple keystrokes per character. I am wondering if there is
a simpler way to input Japanese characters. Thinking along the line of
redefining keys on current keyboard. I know that my friends in Japan using
Japanese computers, probably using XP now, can write in either Japanese or
English directly.

you want to change your language version of OS to Japanese?

Purpose of IME is to enable English version of the OS to input Japanese without
acquiring new software or hardware

NO No no
I want to keep the English version of XP but there must be a simpler way to
input Japanese characters than typing three keys to get one character into a
Email. I receive mail from there that is often a couple of paragraphs in
English and a couple in Japanese. I am reasonably certain that they do not
have to type three keys to get one character in either Japanese or English.
Wine! Sounds like a great idea.

Thanks PA Bear. That is the system I have been using. It requires 2 to 3
keys per character using a Romangi to hiragana or other Japanese character
conversion. Still find no way to DIRECTLY enter these characters one per
keystroke.

Without a Japanese-language version of WinXP and a Japanese-language
keyboard, I suspect you're right.
