Outlook Express 6 won’t open

OE6 hangs at the splash screen. When looking at file Msimn in the
task manager, it shows (not responding). I have tried, replacing the msimn
file;
uninstalling/reinstalling OE6; running sfc file checker, everything short of
modifying
the registry.
OE6 acts as if another copy is already running?????
Any suggestions appreciated…

Search for .dbx files on your machine. Be aware that they might be in
a hidden directory, so make sure to include those in the search. The
exact location depends on the Windows version you are using.
If you find them, copy all of them to a new folder where you will find
them again. Then delete them in their original folder. Does OE start
again? If yes, try importing your message store from the backup folder
you just created.

If OE is already running, then its likely a 3rd party program is messing it
up. Do points 2 and 3 here (www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx) and also see point
7.

UPDATE:
Thank you,
Roland, Pa Bear & Steve for the quick replies.
I now have OE6 open under a new identity but my old messages are gone.
I ran a search for .dbx files and found them under another (old) identity.
I have tried to run import... (to no avail)
Question? Can I recover them at this stage?
Again, thanks for all the help.....

Sure, each identity has it's own message store.

Check if any of the dbx files is write-protected. If yes, remove the
protection. Did you try the further advice from Tom's InsideOE? The
part about trying without folders.dbx should be interesting!
> Question? Can I recover them at this stage?
Are there many local folders that you created yourself? If yes, it will
be a lot of handwork required ... ;-)
In the new identity create a local folder with the name of one of your
old dbx files. Move to this folder once. Close OE and replace the new
file with the old one. OE should then show at next start the content
of this folder again.
A very similiar procedure is described in the last paragraph here:
http://www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx, which was also mentioned in the
link Steve provided. If this also doesn't work, you will have to fall
back on #4 on his website.

De nada. :-)
