Help, please: transferring files

My father-in-law just got a new HP computer running Windows XP with IE6 and
OE6.0 already installed. His old computer has OE6.0 also, but running under
Windows 98. I want to transfer his address book and all message files from
the old to the new, have followed instructions, but it just doesn't happen.

The address book .wab files get onto a CD okay, but the new computer can't
read them, let alone put them inthe right place.

As for messages, I have dropped all his old .mbx, .dbx and (I think) .dbi
(or maybe .mbi) files in the proper place, but OE on the new computer won't
respond to them. The instructions in OE for transferring files are a bit
vague going from one computer to another, most Help info deals with
interfacing with Netscape or maybe transferring to/from Outlook. There must
be a way to do this; can someone point me in the right direction? Many
thanks!

Did you copy the CD to the HDD of the new computer and then remove the Read
Only attributes for each file?

See Backup and Restore instructions:

Thanks, Bruce,

I had no idea about removing the 'read only' attribute. I will reference
your links and give it another try in the next day or so. Many thanks for
'being there' for us.

For files that were copied to CD, after copying the file back to the hard disk, you must
remove the Read-only attribute that all CD files automatically get before using the file
in your application. Right click the file in the Windows File Explorer, select Properties
and the General tab and uncheck the Read-Only box.

Yes, Mike, thanks;

I believe that was mentioned earlier too, or I saw it in some online help.
I will give that a try, for sure, but I am a bit concerned that the file
extensions from the Win98 installation of OE6 are not the same as those I see
under XP. Most now are all .dbx files; the earlier ones are .mbx and
something with an 'i' in it. I'll keep trying.

MBX/IDX file pairs were associated with OE4. To import OE4 messages, see
the info at this link:

Jim: That explains the different extensions. I read and printed your link,
which seems to explain all. Wish me luck and many thanks!

Glad to help. Be aware the MBX/IDX files must be in a folder with the name
of "Mail" and no other name will work. You must clear the Read-Only
attribute for each file in the Mail folder (you cannot import from a CD or
other removable media). Good luck and thanks for the feedback.

And don't forget about using MBXtract as a last resort:
