FUBAR: do not compact!

Discovered by chance that if I compact my OE6 folders the system simply eats
up some messages...the first time this happened it "deleted" about 10
folders in one sector (all beginning with D-M, but scattered)....I carefully
moved my mailstore folder to preserve all the dbx. files, but lo, when I did
that, the folders that had vanished from OE also vanished from the hard
drive. So when this happened again (and no, I'm not stupid; I didn't realize
that "compacting" caused the problem until it happened the second time) I
did nothing; I still have the folder on my hard drive....so here's the deal;
I can't import any of those back to OE...I get the message saying the
program is in use or files aren't there....when I tried to import from CD
backup (a CD made in 2003) I got the same message UNTIL I tried it on a
computer running Win98, and then it would work. but it will not import on
any system running XP (I've tried three computers now). My trust in OE is
pretty well fried, will switch to Eudora (do have gmail but need
non-web-based for existing work e-dress)....what the F....is going on? what
happened to OE? I would consider reloading it because my version is
obviously corrupt, but....I took it to my trusty tech and he refused to deal
with it, he says OE is just a problem waiting to happen and re-happen.

Hi Ho Silver

The reference article is interest ing...especially this statement: "Also
know that altering even a single byte in a DBX file might render the file
completely unusable by Outlook Express." This reminds me of the Ray
Bradbury story, "The Sound of Thunder" where someone goes back into
prehistoric time and steps on a butterfly, thereby horribly altering the
future to which he returned... just a weird and off topic thought...

big sci-fi fan here too, and there have been many time travel stories
theorizing what happens when one thing is changed....

You posted using OE 5.5 SP2. Were you posting from the Win98 machine?
You can't import directly from CD.
Files you've copied from CD to your HDD must have the Read Only attribute
removed before they will import.

I don't know about Jim, but I don't use my GMail account as a web mail
account. Email to my GMail account is forwarded to my domain email account.
Email from my GMail account is compose offline in a mail client, and sent
through a mail client; but I use Pegasus Mail. So far, I have not
encountered some of the stupider aspects of MS Outlook Express.

My Gmail account is just a SPAM trap, checked every couple weeks. People
who just can't avoid the Reply All button wind up there and are deleted
every couple of weeks.

With respect to Fubar Express, it must have been a very large butterfly.
Maybe Mothra?
BTW, DBXtract and DBXpress will recover the messages often under those
circumstances. But see points 2, 3 and 4 here: www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx
