Removing personal data from old PC, now OE on old PC doesn't work properly.
Have tried reinstalling OE and address book but still can't forward emails
or create a new one. Exhausted Dell Help and Support and Microsoft site
suggestions.
Something is wrong with OE installation on the PC - any ideas please ?

How to Reinstall or Repair IE6 and OE6:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378

Although written for WinXP, it works for all Windows operating systems 98 or
newer.

If you are using WinXP/SP2, and it was not already on your computer from the
factory, you will have to remove SP2 first.

Thanks for responding Bruce.
I actually use Windows Me but will try your suggestion later today and reply
again.

I regret this has not solved the problem. I ran IE6SETUP then got "Setup
unable to install all components". Rerunning IE6SETUP didn't help. Still
"error opening message" when Create Mail etc.
Can you help further please ?

Thanks

Go to Start | Run and type msconfig and disable all startup items and
reboot. Then try it again.

OE problems are often related to message store and / or registry corruption
which reinstallation does not fix. If you can open OE, then go to File |
Identities and set up a new Identity and then do points 2 and 3 here:
www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx . See if that fixes your problems, or rather,
the computer's. <G>

I disabled all startup items but IE6SETUP still won't install all components.
I created a new identity, turned off compaction on both identities, email
scanning in A/V is off.
Still get "error opening message" and "Address book failed to load". I did
try importing wab32.dll from WXP PC to WMe PC but problems remain.
Any other ideas please ?

You don't want to mix dlls from different OSs. That's a surefire way to
mess things up.

See if this helps at all:

No progress I'm afraid, still got same problems. Now using wab32.dll from old
laptop running WMe. I feel OE isn't installing properly.
I saw ads for scandbx and PcOnPoint on insideoe, PcOnPoint threw up massive
amount of errors including 773 in the registry - will I have to resort to
that or local professional help.

Let's back up here: What Windows version is this "old" PC running?

What IE version? Is IE working?

My old PC is a Dell 8100 running Windows Me. I bought a new 8400 just
recently and problems arose when removing personal files.
IE is fine and is version 5.50

Thanks for sticking with me.

So the problem exists on the WinME machine:

1. Was IE6 ever installed on the WinME machine? If not, stop. If so...

2a. Did you ever reinstall WinME after having upgraded to IE6?

2b. Did you uninstall IE6 before reinstalling WinME?

Prior to the suggestion from Bruce Hagen to reinstall OS and then repair IE6
and OE6 I was on IE6. Hence I did reinstall WinME after being on IE6, I did
not uninstall IE6 as I did not see an obvious way of doing it and I do not
recall that being part of the procedure. I changed the required settings in
the registry and then ran ie6setup.exe but installation has never been
complete. OE6 opens but obviously has problems. Now on the add/remove
programs list I have Outlook Express Repair from carrying out earlier
suggestions. I am trying to provide as much information for you as possible.

X-Post to WinME General

That's what I thought. Your OE problem is caused by what the WinME pros
call "version soup".

AFAIK here's the only way to make things right again:
http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/reinME.htm

I suggest you post anything further to microsoft.public.windowsme.general.
Your problem's with the OS, not OE itself.

I regret that reinMe has not helped.
It is incredible that deleting OE inbox messages has created this problem.
Any other suggestion to get the PC operating normally would be very much
appreciated.

Deleting messages from your Inbox has nothing to do with the problem. The
fact that you reinstalled WinME without first having uninstalling IE6 SP1
does.

Did you follow the steps given on MVP Noel Paton's page
http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/reinME.htm ??

Have you posted further to WindowsME General newsgroup for assistance?

Specifically, after reinstalling ME, did you then update ME back to its
fully-updated status, and then run Belarc Advisor to check the patch
currency??

There is no point in reinstalling an OS unless you follow-through with the
patches!

Courtesy reply here, then I post to Win Me General.
I performed all actions as specified on reinME including removing IE. W Me
updates but IE install is incomplete. OE problems remain. Belarc seems to
report all OK
