my Outlook Express has gotten into a mode where everytime it checks for new
mail, it plays the sound and pops up the "New Mail" tray icon, even if there
is no new mail.

problem seems to be in an IMAP folder, but i cannot be certain.

Any ideas?

You may have some server side rules that are moving messages to the Deleted
Items folder or some antispam program that is causing it. Any incoming
mail, whether it is acted upon by a message rule (for IMAP, the rules would
have to be on the server) or some antispam programs that move messages to a
Junk or Spam folder can also cause it.

Also check your Blocked Sender list since those also wind up in the Deleted
Items folder.
