sluggish OE, how to repair?

Hi folks--

Im having problems with the newsgroups feature in OE--specifically, the
program takes a long time to *catch up* and *mark all read* when I want to
select all messages in a newsgroup as being read. Also, it occasionally
takes a long time to download newsgroup messages, and to open up the
newsgroup screen.

I've tried deleting and redownloading OE, but that hasn't really helped. Is
there something I can do short of erasing or reformatting my hard drive?
If not, how do I do this so I'm able to reload the OS with a minimum of
problems?

I'm on Dell Inspiron 3750 laptop, with Windows ME and 256 MB RAM.. The
computer orignally came with Windows 98, and I still have this installation
disk, and also emergency boot disks for both Windows 98 and Windows ME.

You can reply to me here on the newsgroup or by e-mail.

1. Catch-Up and Mark All Read is faster for many users if View | Current
View | Group Messages by Conversation is disabled.

2. Clean up your newsgroups:

3. Compact all folders: http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact

4. "Take Out the Trash"

5. Then and only then: Check in at Windows Update. The headers of your post
tell me that you're running very outdated and much less-secure versions of
OE, IE and Windows.
