Message list flicker
Kevin Withers

Every 10 seconds, the message window in Outlook Express flickers as if it's
refreshing itself. It doesn't matter which folder I'm in - Inbox, Deleted,
etc. I've had some other intermittant strange things happen, like a
minimized message that pops back up on its own, and adding a new contact
which appears in the address book but not in the list of contacts in the
lower left of the screen.
But the flicker is driving me nuts. Every 10 seconds. This just started
the other day.
Any idea as to what's wrong? Or do I just reinstall Outlook Express?
I'm using XP Pro on a 400Mhz PC. For protection I'm running Norton
AntiVirus, Zone Labs Security ZoneAlarm, the SBC Yahoo! pop up blocker,
SpywareBlaster, and WinPatrol. I've done sweeps with AntiVirus, Ad aware 6,
SBC Yahoo! Anti-Spy, and Spybot Search & Destroy, and deleted the found ads,
tracking cookies, etc. but it didn't help. I have no news accounts in my
"Internet Accounts" list.

Motive SmartBridge (MOTIVESB.EXE) may have been installed by your ISP to aid
in reporting connection issues. I would consider uninstalling this
application unless you use it. Alternatively open MSConfig (Start, Run and
enter MSConfig in the box and click OK), open the Startup tab and uncheck
"Motive SmartBridge". See if that fixes the problem.

Nope - no Motive SmartBridge listed. I also searched for MOTIVESB.EXE on the
hard drive just in case, and found nothing.

You do have other SBC Yahoo! software installed? Drop it. You don't need
it. There are better pop-up blockers, better firewalls, etc. I have SBC
Yahoo! DSL Service, and the only Yahoo! software on board is the Yahoo!
Messenger client, which was installed before I migrated to SBC-Y.
If you are behind a router, let the router handle the PPPoE. Or, maybe you
have one of the slick new DSL modems which handles the PPPoE. Windows XP
also includes a PPPoE client, so you shouldn't need any of the SBC stuff.
Even the browser; MS Internet Explorer is adequate; though I prefer other,
better, browsers.
One thought, though; how often is MSOE set to poll your SBC accounts, and
how many sub accounts are you polling? If "Check for new messages" is set
to 10 seconds, maybe that is causing the flicker; especially if you are
polling more that one POP3 account.

I do have those other SBC Yahoo! features installed and running, and I'm sure
there are better pop-up blockers and firewalls, but I've had these running
for quite some time now without a problem. Maybe in the future I'll replace
them with some third-party solutions that are better.
I'm connected directly to the Internet through SBC's 2Wire DSL modem - no
router involved. I also have no other POP3 accounts in OE, and because I get
a lot of e-mail I have OE checking for new messages every one minute, which
has never been a problem in the past.

Set it for 10 minutes, clicked "Apply" and "Ok," and the problem is still
there. Shut down OE and restarted it, still flickers every 10 seconds.

Is WinXP SP2 installed?
If you temporarily disable NAV, does the flickering persist?
Does this flickering happen in any other application?

I read through it and it doesn't sound like what I'm suffering from - it has
to do with animation.
I have noticed one other thing. After a while, my RAM is full and I have to
close everything down and reboot. Whatever this is eats up my RAM.
Is there a way to find what's doing this by using the Windows Task Manager?
If so, what should I look for? I notice that SVCHOST.EXE is listed several
times - could that be the problem?

Sounds like spyware. Try going to Start | Run and type msconfig and disable
all startup items and then see if that has an impact on the problem.
See also www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#10 for spyware removal links.

Thanks! It looks like I've got some work ahead of me.
If nothing else works, I guess I'll try reinstalling IE.

Yup - WinXP SP2 is installed.
Disabling NAV doesn't make any difference.
However, I have noticed that there's a little bit of sporadic flickering in
Visual Basic 6. The tool bar at the top sometimes flickers slightly at the
same time that OE flickers. I can tell because OE flickers every 10 seconds,
and once the flicker occurs in OE, if I switch tasks over to VB6, at the next
10 second mark the tool bar flickers slightly. It's not as pronounced as the
flicker in OE, and sometimes it can't be seen at all.

Hijackware infects the OS. If Windows is infected, reinstalling IE won't
help one bit.

Could be caused by overheating (It's that time of year again: Carefully
remove the cover of your processor, vacuum out all the gook & dust bunnies,
make sure fans are working properly), a problem with power supply or even a
monitor on its last legs.

Well, maybe... But the flicker only occurs in certain windows, and not the
entire screen. When the list of inbox messages in OE flickers, the other
portions of the screen - the contacts list, the folders list, etc., don't
flicker.

Ok. Then I guess that, if the links that you supplied don't help, then it's
probably time for an XP reinstall. Ugh.

I'm starting to see that this may be the case. Last night I found one other
application that suffers from the same flickering - ArcSoft ZoomBrowser EX -
it's photo management software that came with my Canon digital camera. It's
got the same 10 second flicker that OE has, so it looks like this is not
something that's hit just OE - it's probably hit the OS.
Thanks to all here for their help. I'm going to try the different
hijackware solutions. If nothing helps I'll reinstall Win XP.
Thanks again.
