Configuring Outlook Express to work with a spam filter

I have used Inboxcop (spam filter) for over a year and love it, but the
product has changed to SpamSafe and so I converted. I have Spamsafe working
fine, but Outlook Express now comes back with the message,
"The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'Martha's email', Server:
'localhost', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061,
Error Number: 0x800CCC0E"
I have all my settings exactly as I was told - in fact they are the same
that worked when the product was InboxCop. If I change the incoming server to
be the real server (bypassing spam filter), it works - so I know my port
settings are fine.

If the email has already been retrieved by a spam filter - why is it trying
to find a port to just read it within the same computer? Any ideas would be
most appreciated.

Try these options:

Turn of e-mail scanning. You will still be protected.

No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

But I have a feeling that your Anti-Spam program is changing your settings
in Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties.

I would check with your ISP to make sure they are correct.

Thanks for getting back to me. I had tried earlier turning off email scanning
(I have McAfee), but it didn't make a difference. I have checked the settings
lots of times and they are fine. If I just change my incoming server to the
real server, vs "localhost", it works perfectly (but bypasses the spam
filter). And it had worked perfectly as "localhost" with the other spam
filter program. Their "next tier" tech support is supposed to be getting back
to me.

Thinking that OE might be confused, I even deleted my account, rebooted,
rebuilt it - but nothing has changed. If for some reason I need to reinstall
Outlook Express (just in case something got corrupted), is there a spot that
explains the process? (I would hate to lose my emails)

Thanks

In Tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Servers, *Localhost* should not be
there. I only know the settings for a few ISPs, but that is not correct.
Hopefully, they will get back to you and straighten it out.

The reason I was told "localhost" (repeatedly, I might add), is that the spam
filter engine goes out to Yahoo and gets my mail, and scans it. Then it puts
it into folders such as "looks good", "likely spam" etc - and then OE is
supposed to go get it from that "looks good" folder, NOT the ISP. This is how
it worked with the InboxCop application and there were no issues. So it's
more of a proxy server type thing. I do send email directly to the ISP, which
is working fine.

If (hopefully when) I get an answer, I'll post it.

Thanks for your assistance.
