Server cannot be found

I've suddenly begun getting this error almost every time I open Outlook
Express, or when I click Send/Receive, or when I close it and there is mail
to be sent. *Sometimes* it works, and I see new incoming messages and those
that I have composed get sent. I have no trouble getting to my Hotmail
account directly via IE. This has been going on for two days. One day I
was using a dialup connection, and today I'm on a cable modem connection...
same PC.
Any ideas?

Hotmail account? Everyone seems to be having this trouble today.
FYI
Courtesy of N Miller -
1.) Free MSN Hotmail accounts created subsequent to Sept. 24, 2004 can't
be used with MS Outlook Express.
2.) Free MSN Hotmail accounts created prior to Sept. 24, 2004 can't be
used with MS Outlook Express.
3.) Free MSN Hotmail accounts created prior to Sept. 24, 2004, and
configured for access with MS Outlook Express prior to Sept. 24, 2004
can continue to be accessed with MS Outlook Express until MSN decides
otherwise.
4.) All MSN Hotmail Plus accounts, which cost $19.95US per year, can be
configured to use MS Outlook Express.

Actually, points 2.) and 3.) are in conflict as written. Hmmm. Did I write
it that way? Point 2.) should read something like:
Free MSN Hotmail accounts created prior to Sept. 24, 2004, and not
configured for access with MS Outlook Express prior to that date, can't be
used with MS Outlook Express.
Also, according to another MVP, the actual date should be Sept. 27, not
Sept. 24. I calculated on the cutoff being a Friday; apparently it was
actually a Monday.

A "server can't be found" error could be a DNS issue. If you are using
Windows XP, and possibly Windows 2K, you may need to flush your DNS cache.
Comcast has had severe DNS problems in the past. My own ISP has a minor DNS
problem with one site; I can reach it from outside of my DSL IP address,
but not within it.
Also, the MSN Hotmail servers have been known to be flaky. I don't use my
Hotmail account often enough to see it a lot, but I have been unable to log
in on two, or three occasions in the past two months. Waiting a few hours,
then trying again is the only course of action that I have taken in such
cases.

Yes you did! Per previous post, have kept the "corrected" wording.

But...are all these problems with Hotmail today due to the above? PA
Bear reckons it's Hotmails servers. He has an account that he has kept
active and it's a no go for him today, too.

I believe that most of the problems, especially the "server not found"
problems are not due to cutting off access to free MSN Hotmail accounts. I
did reactivate one of my ancient free MSN Hotmail accounts past the 90 day
limit just to see what would happen if I tried to access the account with
MSOE. The error that comes back clearly states that I need a paid account
for access. I must conclude from that error that any error message which
does not include that statement indicates some other problem than cutting
off HTTPMail access on free accounts.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Access to Hotmail via Outlook and Outlook Express now requires a
subscription. Please sign up at http://upgrade.msn.com
Configuration:
Account: Hotmail
Server: http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp
User name: ***@hotmail.com
Protocol: HTTPMail
Port: 0
Secure(SSL): 0
Code: 80004005
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That seems pretty clear to me. Until I see that on my current active free
MSN Hotmail account I will conclude that any problems I am having with
Hotmail are not related to the requirement to have a paid account.
Sorry about the poor description I offered about the other stuff. I really
should have posted from a less fatigued state. This state I am currently in
is highly fatigued, but that is San Andreas' fault! ;)
(Or, maybe, Hayward's fault?)

Norman, thanks for such a good explanation (another keeper!) and now I
know what to look for in the different error messages.
And I know all about San Andreas..."I'll join you in a minute, dear" and
two hours later I have to remind him to come to bed!
