Why is it that when replying to some messages the > does not appear in
front of the original message? Yet in others it does
I have it ticked in -Tools -Options - Send.

In Tools | Options | Send, if Reply to messages in the format they were sent
is checked, then if someone posts in HTML, you will be replying in HTML and
indenting with > is not an option unless you click Format and change it to
Plain Text.

If the message to which you are replying was formatted using Quoted
Printable, the reply carets will not be added.
