Default Mail Account Keeps Changing
Candy

I have a DIFFERENT default mail problem. EVERY TIME I start Outlook
Express, it says that it is NOT my default mail account. But, it IS. I
change it to my default mail account in options EVERY time, but the change
does not stick. This is VERY frustrating. Does anyone know what I can do
to make the default email account change STICK? Thank you very much.

Open IE. Tools/Internet Options/Programs. Make sure OE is listed as your
mail program.

Go to Start | Run and type the following:
"C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /reg
(Check the path to msimn.exe to make sure that is correct)
(Copy and paste the above line to make sure it is correect)
Then open Internet Explorer and go to Tools | Internet Options |
Programs and set OE as the default mail (and news) program.

Yes, it is. It always has been. Something changed somewhere, and I don't
know what or where. And still, I have to click that button every time I
turn the computer back on. Why is it doing that? Does anyone know? Can
anyone help me? Thanks if you can.

Make OE the default e-mail client:
http://www.oehelp.com/oedef.aspx
See this if it still does not set as default:

O.K., Kath, I'm not sure what you mean by:
> Go to Start | Run and type the following:
> "C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /reg
> (Check the path to msimn.exe to make sure that is correct)
> (Copy and paste the above line to make sure it is correect)
How much of that am I to type in? I did what I thought was correct, and
nothing seemed to happen. I opened up IE and checked programs, and Outlook
Express was listed. It was not, before. Only Microsoft Outlook was. That
isn't working, either, but I don't use it anyway. Now that Outlook Express
has appeared and is checked, does that mean my problem is solved? I don't
want to reboot just yet. My computer is old, only has 64 meds of RAM and
300 MHz, and takes forever to boot up.
If my problem is now solved, thanks VERY MUCH for your help, Kath.

What's "forever"? Are you running Windows 98? Me? XP? Sounds to me like
there's more wrong with your computer than what you say. If you aren't very
computer savvy, take it to a shop and have it looked over. If you are
computer savvy, run scumware removal programs like AdAware, CWShredder,
Spybot Search and Destroy and your anti virus. When was the last time you
did a clean up, scan disk and defrag?

C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE

The links Bruce gave me seem to be working so far. I haven't actually TIMED
how long it takes to boot up. If it takes longer than a minute, any ideas
on what I can check or do? As it is, I try to do Ad-Aware, Spybot, and
everything in Norton System Works at least weekly.
Any advice would be appreciated.

O.K. I timed it this morning right after the reboot that comes when you use
the Optimize Wizard on Norton System Works. It took five minutes. As I
asked below, since it took longer than a minute, or even two, any ideas on
what I can check or do to speed it up? Thanks.

Candy: With that many programs loading at start up, it's a wonder that 5
minutes is enough. Try considering which ones are essential to you and
uncheck the remainder in the Startup tab of MSCONFIG, then reboot. Startup
should be about 60-90 seconds to load the operating system and one or two
essential programs, but anything more that that will delay the complete
startup. Your choice.

O.K., Jim, but which ones are absolutely essential, and which ones can wait?
When I go to a couple of web sites that tell you what programs can be
removed and which ones can't, not very many programs say that you can remove
them. Can you help me, please? Thanks.

I'd try removing all from the startup tab that are not obviously Microsoft
programs. Any others you wish to have running can be started via Start/All
Programs or via shortcuts you create to them placed on your Desktop or Quick
Launch Bar. Try eliminating the following:
Weather
MyWebSearch Email Plugin
System Tray
Essdc
Aureal A3D Interactive Audio Init
ccApp
ccRegVfy
NPROTECT
QD FastAndSafe
ccEvtMgr
ScriptBlocking
I'd also recommend you search your entire system for spyware or parasites
and a good place to begin would be at this link:

And for a quick check:
