I have a system that has crashed. I tried to reinstall IE6, but when it
tries to open Outlook Exp. I get a
a msg. it can't find a dll file. The file is there though. Before I do the
deadly reformat in an effort to salvage the pc is there a file I can copy
that would have my addr. book in it. I can open IE to copy (by hand) most of
the bookmarks. So at this pt. I am looking to gather up the addr. book if
possibel. I am now on running XP up from 98Se. Thanks in advance.

Open the Address Book | File | Export | Address Book (wab). Copy to CD or
Floppy and Import Later.
How to Reinstall or Repair IE6 and OE6:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378
Although written for WinXP, it works for all Windows operating systems 98 or
newer.
If you are using WinXP/SP2, and it was not already on your computer from the
factory, you will have to remove SP2 first.
How to remove SP2:

Bruce,
I Can not export the file I am unable to get OE to open. I get That
MSOE.dll could not be loaded.
I will try Su. looking at the articles on trying to repair OE.
If however it is just going into IE and doing Repair I did that many times).
I also reinstalled IE many times.
As I said right now I am trying to find a file that might be burried in the
foler itself.

Address Book has nothing to do with your problem. See
http://www.insideoe.com/problems/errors.htm
Why did it happen? See
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/filecorruption.mspx.
General OE Caveats:
- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.
- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.
- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.
- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Bruce, I just wasted 5mins writting back. I hit reply vs. reply group. So
now I have to type this all again<g>.
On the bad machine I have 98se. There is no path as you describe. I did a
search on addressboo*.* and found a hidden folder Addressbook in Uninstall
Info.(?). It was too big for notepad. Wordpad won't read. I get an error
(non specific). So I opened the file in Word. It is in hyroglific (if you
will). I guess the prog. reads it ok. Is this the file you mention? If so
would it go to the path you specified prev.
Due to my sched. I don't have time to read or do much of anything during the
back 1/2 of the wk. That is why I say I will read any articles mentioned
from Sun-Wed.
Thanks again.

Try this. Click Start/Run and type:
WAB /A <== note space between WAB and /A
When (and if) it opens, click Help/About to determine the file path to the
address book. You can also use its menu to export a copy as a CSV (comma
separated value) file which can be imported into any other version of
Outlook Express on another computer. If the book will not open from the
Start/Run line, then you've lost the address book somehow and I have no idea
how or why and I doubt it is recoverable.

Make sure path & file name are correct. And that all req. libraries are
avail.
Does this mean it is gone the way of the OS. Kablooie?

The Windows Address Book is used by many parts of Windows and not exclusive
to Outlook Express. If you can open the operating system involved, click
Start/All Programs/Accessories/Address Book and see what comes up. If
nothing shows, then your address book is gone. You can create a new one by
clicking Start/Run and type:
WAB /new
Then give it a location to be stored at. For more info about the Windows
Address Book, see this link:
