I just answered 'OK' to the compacting message request on Outlook Express.
When I opened it back up, four months of emails have disappeared. All emails
received from prior to then remains, but the others seem to be lost? Has this
happened to anyone or can anyone recommend a solution? I downloaded a program
called OE-MailRecovery, which found all of my lost emails, but won't allow me
to restore them unless I pay $40. Can anyone suggest a better way?

Avoid Such Corruption in Future:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.
