Cant transfer or import OE Inbox.dbx file from old 2K PC to new XP PC
Hello,
I recently bought a new PC and had transferred my documents and
settings folder to a rewritable DVD so that I could transfer my
outlook express e-mail to my new windowsXP machine (my old PC ran
windows 2K). I follow the instructions I had seen online about
transferring my old store folder with the .dbx files to the store
folder on my new PC. I found out what the new store folder was by
looking under maintenance/store folder. When I did this and started
outlook express I noticed all the folders that I had created on my old
machine where there with all their messages however the inbox was
empty but I had a lot of messages in my old inbox, the inbox on my old
machine was 22 MB. I also tried creating a new identity in outlook
express in creating a subfolder that match the name of each .dbx file
I was trying to transfer of this did not work either. The folder files
I was trying to transfer were not read only files.
-was I supposed to create a subfolder for the outlook express system
files such as the "folders "subfolder? Also, I noticed in the new
store folder there were .dbx files "inbox (1).dbx " and "folders
(1).dbx " files. Does this have anything to do with my not being able
to get to the files in my old inbox.dbx? Also, I tried using DBXtract
to open my inbox file but when it ran the status bar appeared then
disappeared but no messages appeared in the window. I tried running
it on some other outlook express folder files in eight extracted
e-mails fine, is there a size limitation for DBXtract? Any idea if
DBXpress would work any better?
I also tried importing the inbox files and at first got a message that
the files were in use or didn't exist. I tried this importing from
both the main identity as well as a store file but got the same
message. I set up a new identity in tried this again and got to the
point where I was prompted for which folder I wanted to import and
selected inbox however again, no messages appeared in the new inbox.
Any help you can provide is greatly, greatly appreciated!

What you should have done was copy the dbx folders (including
Folders.dbx) from the DVD to a folder on your new desktop. Right click
on them, remove the "read only" attribute and then use file>import in OE
and point to the folder on your desktop. You can't just replace the
folders in the store folder on your new PC with the ones from your old
PC. Also, unless Folders.dbx was included in the backup, the import will
fail.

That was the first thing I tried, however I did not create a folder on
the desktop, I created a temporary directory under the C:\ drive, not
sure that would make a difference? When I tried to import I got the
message that the files were in use. The reason I created the
subfolders and copied the files over was because I read that in a
previous post;
You have 14 dbx files. Create folders with the same name as each file
in the folder tree in OE. Copy any message to each folder. They must
have one message in them. Close OE and open Windows explorer. On by
one, drag each of the 14 files to the Outlook Express folder in
Documents and Settings. The same folder that if you clicked on it
would revel your current dbx files. Each time you drag a file to it
(the folder will turn blue) release the mouse key. You will get a
prompt asking if you want to overwrite the file? Click Yes and the
messages from the dbx file will be placed in the folder in OE and the
message you copied to the folder will be gone. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP -

it still possible for me to to use the import method considering I've
copied all my old folder files to my store directory?

No, it matters not where the temporary folder is, I usually say desktop
for ease of use. And for those not so computer savvy, seeing the folders
on their desktop usually helps.
Bruce's solution is a workaround if Folders.dbx is not included in the
backup. Was Folders.dbx included in your backup? If so, you can use
File>import. If not, the workaround should be used.
If all your mail is now where it should be, leave well alone. If on the
other hand, the mail folders are empty, if it was me, and I had included
Folders.dbx in the backup, I would start again. ( I would even close OE
and delete every dbx folder in the store including the defaults, to
start completely fresh.)
Copy the contents of the DVD to your hard drive. Remove the read only
attribute. Use File>import pointing to the OE store folder you copied
the dbx folders to. It matters not where OE has it's current store
folder if you are using the File>import method. OE knows where to import
to.
If you use the manual workaround, because you did not include
Folders.dbx, then you will have to know where the store folder is.
