checking mail accounts

I keep a secondary mail account on Hotmail and have setup MSIE 6 to check it
from Outlook Express. I have, as a long time customer, been grandfathered
to continue to use Outlook Express to check my mail on Hotmail.
The problem is that sometimes it takes a mere 3 or 4 seconds to check and
other times it will hang and continue "checking" Hotmail for long periods of
time. I, of course, want the process to be much quicker.
Suggestions?

Eve,
Basically, if your HotMail acct has worked before, and you made no changes
to the acct, or to your OE settings. Also no changes with your ISP service,
or security programs, such as anti-virus or spyware. Then any delay/failures
in download from HotMail into OE, can usually be traced back to failures of
the HotMail servers. And the only thing that you can do, is wait and try
again a later time.
I believe that MS is sharing their HotMail and MSN ISP Mail servers and/or
resources, up to a point. You say that you have one of the "grandfathered"
accts. I bet that those now paying a yearly subscription for HotMail, or use
the MSN ISP mail service, experience the same "outages" or delays, and are
mad because their service is no better than the "free" HotMail. On occasion
you will see questions in OE newsgroup, "Why is my MSN not working now", or
server failures, such as seen with HotMail accts.
And the delays in download, can be just that too many HotMail and MSN users
are trying to get their mail at the same time. So you will need to wait your
turn.

Mostly just commenting that I'm seeing the same problems. If I was a paying
customer of their Hotmail email service, I'd certainly be furious, and since
we don't seem to be seeing so many furious posts of that type, I think we
have to conclude that the paying customers are getting much better service
than I'm seeing. For me, Hotmail through OE is failing about 90% of the
time. In my situation, it's only a very minor secondary email account
(mostly for testing purposes and only because it's free), but the fact that
OE sometimes hangs at that point and fails to check the other email accounts
is rather more serious and annoying. Maybe the problem is my network
connection from Japan makes the problem worse and more visible?
Anyway, if Microsoft is trying to sell hotmail accounts, they are going
about it in a very funny fashion. If they are trying to demonstrate their
superior server capabilities and low, low "costs of ownership", then it's
even funnier.
Is Microsoft really so hard up for computing resources? Or maybe they've
just been overwhelmed by the spam?
