Re-send

My connection shut down in the middle of sending an e-mail. The response
said to go to the Sent Items Folder and re-send it. I went to the folder but
can't figure out how to re-send it. Any help?
Thanks.

Outlook or Outlook Express?
Did this "response" come from OE? OE doesn't have a resend option:

Yes I use OE and I got this response from Norton AV, I guess. So I'll just
start out fresh. Thanks PA Bear.

YW.
I suggest you disable NAV's Email Protection. It provides no additional
protection and even Symantec says it's not necessary:
<paste>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.
</paste>

With Norton set to scan outgoing mail, when OE sends a messages, Norton intercepts it and
pretends to be the mail server to OE and OE thinks the message has successfully be sent
when it still might fail in Norton. As PA Bear said, it's best to turn the e-mail
scanning off as it causes more problems than it helps.
As for resending the message from the sent items folder, there is a way to do that.
- Do a File, Save As of the message to an EML file (or drag-and-drop). Open the EML file
in Notepad. Add the line
X-Unsent: 1
to the message header (after the DATE: line is a good spot). Save the file, then double
click the EML file from the Windows File Explorer. You can now resend the message.

What do you mean it provides no additional protection????? I thought that
was the purpose of anti-virus software to check incoming e-mails for
viruses. What else would it be for?

Turn off email scanning in your anti-virus. It provides no added
protection.
The Other E-Mail Threat: File Corruption in Outlook Express
Published: November 18, 2004
By Tom Koch
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/filecorruption.mspx
Email scanning slows down Sending and Receiving, sometimes enough that OE
times out. Since some of the received messages have large (often virus)
attachments, which exasperates the problem.
Some Comcast users have found it necessary to totally uninstall Norton and
switch to the free AVG with mail scanning off. Norton invented email
scanning and here's what they say:
"Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses
that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions."
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/d4578f66d8f00a0188256d4e006aaa94/4ba5fc8ef939c44c88256c7500723cf0
"...your computer is protected if Auto-Protect is enabled. Auto-Protect
scans any incoming files, including email attachments, when the files are
saved to your hard drive."
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001100907323806
"NAV provides multiple layers of protection. Email scanning is just one of
those layers. Even if you are not running Email Scanning, your computer is
protected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments by NAV
Auto-Protect. Auto-Protect will scan any incoming files, including email
attachments, as they are saved to your hard drive. To make sure that
Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled
and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus
definitions."

So Symantec used to say this often and clearly. The newer stuff doesn't
have the statement included as it was considered an embarrassment. If you
know anyone who programs for Norton try to get them to talk about it.

I read it then went to disable both Scan incoming mail & scan outgoing mail
BUT Norton has ":recommended" next to both of these so either they
"recommend" it or they don't.

It's your call, Jim. You might want to review this part of MVP Tom Koch's
recent IE Community column:
Viral Irony: The Most Common Cause of Corruption
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/filecorruption.mspx#EEAA
Until we get a new Mail Client in Longhorn with a less fragile, non-DBX
database, most OE MVPs will recommend disabling email scanning.
All of the above notwithstanding, I will continue to recommend any
anti-virus/security suite applications other than Norton or McAfee.

Thanks PA Bear I feel a little better about disabling e-mail scanning now.
It just seemed counter intuitive. Now my next big question is" My Norton
subscription is up June 12th. What anti-virus software would you recommend
instead since you don't seem to be a big fan of Norton.
Thanks again for all your help.

I don't recommend or endorse any specific AV app as an alternative to NAV or
VirusScan. There are many, reliable ones from which to choose. Few if any
are as troublesome or problematic as Norton or McAfee IMO: TrendMicro
PC-cillin, Panda, Avast, AVG, Kaspersky are but a few.
Both Avast and AVG offer free versions. Kaspersky, like many others, offers
free 30-day trial versions: http://www.kaspersky.com/index.html.
Sometime next year (YMMV), MS says it will offer Windows OneCare, "an
integrated service that includes antivirus, firewall, PC maintenance, and
data backup and restore functionality."
