exporting address book
I am trying to export an address book that has many groups in a hierarchical
format. My main mail box is the only information exporting. I have hundreds
of contacts below my main address book in 60 different groups. no matter how
i try to export or import the data to outlook only the top, or first group of
addresses exports to a file or imports to outlook.
it appears something like this
main addresses (8 contacts)
+Group 1 - (100 contacts)
+Group 2 - (100 contacts)
+Group 3 - (100 contacts)
The only address exporting are those in the Main addresses (8 contacts). I
cannot find any options on how to indicate the structure or what to include
in the import or export.

Can't you get it by going to this:
C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name here>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Address Book
Not that it shouldn't work when you export it but this might work as a
work-around for you for the time being until someone wanders in and has the
real fix for this.

Sorry, groups neither export nor import, Joe.

Just curious Joe. Are talking about Outlook Contacts or are you referring to the Outlook Express address book

You can use a reg hack to enable sharing of Windows Address Book contacts
with OL running on the same machine: cf.
http://www.insideoe.com/files/wab.htm#share
Note that any changes (additions, deletions, edits) made while sharing is
enabled will not be available (displayed) in Address Book when/if sharing is
disabled.

I am reffering to the outlook express address book. I am trying to export
the contacts or address in the outlook express address book and then import
them into outlook. the problem seems to be in the "exporting" procedure in
that there is no way to select the "depth" the whole tree to export. I think
it is a wab file that is created. the other way is to start outlook and
import directly from outlook express, neither way obtains the whol tree, only
the top node.

crap i was afraid of that. i would have to place all the contacts into the
top node of the address book in outlook express. Put some identifier in some
field so i know what group it belongs to. Then export/import. configure the
heirarchy in outlook, then place each contact into it's respective group
based on the identifier given when they were in outlook?

Hi Joe,
You could use vCard files to move the address book folder entries. Outlook
supports the use of vCard files.
