How to stop compacting files
William

How can I stop OE from compacting message files
automatically. Every time it
compacts, all messages inside the files will be gone.
Jim Pickering

Operating system in use? Version of inetcomm.dll as shown in Help/About
screen in Outlook Express?
Without that info, we're just guessing and you don't provide any real info
to even try and formulate a guess.

XP/SP2 has an automatic compacting that takes place when you've
opened/closed Outlook Express 100 times. If you interupt the compacting you
will lose messages that have been stored. On the offchance that you may
still have them available, search for files ending with the extension of
either DBX (in your message store folder) or DBT (files created when a
compacting takes place). There are tools available that can extract
messages from those files at www.oehelp.com
I'd also suggest you review this article:

Thanks very much for your prompt reply. Since OE6
compacts automatically, and there is nothing that be
done, I guess I have to do back up periodically.
Everytime it compacts, error message will appear and the
compacting process will never be completed which results
in loss of messages in the folders. Thanks anyway...

If you allow compacting to complete, the problem should go away. There is a
registry key that keeps track of the number of opening/closing events and
that key can be changed, but the problem remains in that if you force a shut
down of Outlook Express while compacting is ongoing, you risk losing
messages. Hopefully, this will be fixed in future versions, but the DBX
file structure is extremely fragile and prone to corruption. All databases
require compacting to ensure that they can operate quickly and efficiently
and the database for Outlook Express is no different. What is different is
the extreme fragilty of the message store as outlined in the article I
linked to and suggested you read.

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity
(File>Identities>Add new identity). Assuming all is well, import messages
from the old Identity before deleting it (File>Identities>Manage
Identities).
Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.
Empty Deleted Items folder daily.
Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.
Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

It's simpler to manually compact all before the count reaches 100 as
that seems to restart the count process.

Would that running a manual compact /did/ reset the Compact Count. It
doesn't.
The OE Team has promised us a KB article explaining the ins and outs of
Automatic Compacting. We're still waiting for it months later.

I don't like adding tools, spam stoppers, etc. to my OE. So far, I have been
auto compacted about ten times with no problems. Nonetheless, I back up OE
constantly as it is essential for my businesses.

It doesn't add a tool to OE. It's a stand-alone script that you stick
anywhere on your computer and click to have it reset the registry back to
zero.
