Messages received multiple times/Compacting causes error in DIRECTDB

We frequently encounter a problem where every oncoming email appears
multiple times (2 to ten). When this happens I can get rid of the error by
moving email from Inbox to another folder (ala Inbox Archive). Before doing
this any attempt to compact causes a page fault in Directdb (no hit in
M'soft's KB). When doing the copy, this will also result in the same page
fault. I keep doing this until all the messages have been moved. I can
then compact Inbox (and usually Inbox Archive) and the problem is gone until
it reappears.

Two questions: anyone know the cause of this behavior? If not, is there a
tool or technique that is easier and faster than what I am doing?

TIA,
Al

Is it a POP3, HTTP or IMAP account?

You have mentioned several problems.

Go to Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder
Write down where OE is storing its data files.
Close OE.
Go to the Store Folder in Windows. You may have to set Windows Explorer to
show hidden files and folders.
Delete Pop3uidl.dbx
They will down load once more as OE rebuilds the file.

Also go to Tools | Accounts | Mail and double click the account. Either
uncheck the option to leave a copy on the server or check the two options
below it.

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/directdb.htm

Errors in DIRECTDB.DLL or MSOE.DLL generally indicate corruption in the
message store.
Start by moving Folders.dbx to an empty Windows folder (with OE closed).
Note: the DBX files are hidden in Win2K, WinXP and Win2K3. You will lose
your folder hierarchy and the lists of newsgroups on the news servers, but
it might get you into OE.

If that doesn't do it then move all of the DBX files to the same folder as
Folders.dbx (again with OE closed). You should now get into OE. Try
importing the messages from
the folder you moved the DBX files to. If you can't, you can use this tool
to extract the messages:

DBXtract ($5):
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/

Note: It can take a long time (days with really large folders).

The messages can then be dragged from the Windows folder back into a folder
in an open instance of OE.

Okay, you're the expert if not the boss but what am I doing and why? If I
am getting them 4, 5.. 10 times, why do I want to force them to download
again?

You don't _want_ to, but that's what will happen. But Pop3uidl.dbx will no
longer be corrupt.
