importing dbx files - problems

I had to format my hard drive and i saved all my saved email messages
wrong... I tried exporting but that would not work. So i found where the
dbx files were and copied them all to a disk. When i tried to put them
back after the install it would not work. there were about 14 folders and
OE would only pick up one of them. I tried importing and i tried just
copying them into the store folder but nothing works. Any one have any
ideas how i could restore these folders? All i have is a copy of the Dbx
files? is that enough?

1. Put them in their own folder on the had drive.
2. Remove the Read Only attribute.
3. Use OE's File | Import | Messages

Did not work. It still only found 2 of the 14 folders,, and they are the
oldest ones, created back in 2001?? I copied them into a folder on c
drive and then took off read only for the files and folder (I checked the
files afterwards and they were good, not read only) I used the import from
and OE6 directory and then pointed it towards my new folder and it only
found 2 folders?
I also chose import from Outlook express 6 ( i also tried 4 and that didnt
work at all)
Any other suggestions?

Did the dbx files include Folders.dbx?

If not, see the last pargraph here:

When you are trying to import, point to the folder the dbx files are in, not
the dbx files themselves.

Hi Bill,

The message store file, Folders.dbx, is required for the import process to
work as intended. Outlook Express will look for files/folders registered in
Folders.dbx. First, create a new folder in OE with the same name as the DBX
file to be imported, or rename the backup DBX file to be imported the same
as an existing folder. A new folder needs one message file to be recognized
by Folders.dbx. Any message file will do. Drag one from another folder. (See
Examples 1 and 2)

Important

After creating a new folder with the required name of the file you're
intending to import place a copy of the current Folders.dbx file in the
folder containing your backup DBX files.

A desktop shortcut to the message store used by OE can be useful.

Example 1

Your backup file: Work.dbx

Create a new folder with this name, add one message and restart OE.

Add a copy of the Folders.dbx file to the temporary store folder on the
desktop.

Example 2

Your backup file: Work.dbx

Existing Folder: Business

Rename the Work.dbx file to Business.dbx

Add a copy of the Folders.dbx file to the temporary store folder on the
desktop.

In both examples the Folders.dbx file in the current store needs the name of
the folder with messages to be imported recorded. With the original
Folders.dbx file present in the import folder the messages and folder would
be imported.

Hi Bill & Lisa,

What is the origin of the Folders.dbx file in the folder you are importing
from?
What are the other file names in the folder?
Where did the DBX files originate?
Are your (user created) folders) in Outlook Express directly below Local
Folders?

All the folders in your current OE install should have the folder names
recorded. These should be displayed when importing using the current
Folders.dbx file (from OE's message store folder) present in the mail import
folder on the desktop.

Something is amiss here. Even if your saved DBX files are damaged the folder
names should be present when importing. Or if not present a DBX file could
be renamed the same as a folder that does show before importing. A user
created folder in OE would be best to import messages to in order to keep
them separated from current mail messages.

Open the Store Folder

Instead of using search the store folder can be opened directly. Each
identity has its own store folder.

a.. In Outlook Express click on Tools, Options, Maintenance tab...Store
Folder.
b.. Place the cursor at the left of the text of the path to the folder.
c.. Drag the cursor to the right until the text scrolls to the end.
d.. Right-click on the text and choose Copy.
e.. In the Start, Run box right-click Paste. Click OK to open the store
folder.
f.. Close Outlook Express before working with the message store files.

Using Keyboard Shortcuts for Transfer of the Folder Path
Courtesy of: Jim Pickering, MVP-Outlook Express

An even easier method when opening that page is to use the Tab to
highlight the folder location, then Ctrl+C and close OE, then use Start/Run
and Ctrl+V. Same caveat about hidden files applies but can be easily
modified in Explorer by using Tools/Folder Options.

Another part of this that may be my problem is that I changed the store
folder listed under tools-options-maintenance when i first tried to
restore. I did this becuase of a weird glitch.. the old folder said
that it was in documents and settings/administrator/local
settings/applications I went to look in this folder and there was not a
folder named local settings in the administrator folder... I took the read
only off the folder and there were no hidden files. but if i typed in
local settings in the address bar it would come up? Very weird.
so I made a folder called applications in my administrator folder and then
what i did was try to copy and paste my old dbx files into this folder.. I
put them all in there including the folders.dbx that is when i tried all
the importing.

When i first copied the files i want to import, i went to the store folder
and copy and pasted them onto a thumb drive. and now the files are on my
desktop in a folder named outlook messages.

The names in the folders are Bill's mail folders retirement misc pics
and so on. they are all listed as dbx files

Bill & Lisa

I have attached another screen picture of when i was trying to import.
the part on the left shows the folders available to import from my outlook
messages folder on the desktop.. the part on the right shows the folders
that are actually in the outlook messages folder on the desk top.

Hi Bill & Lisa,

Where is the screen shot attachment? Do not attach bitmap file!
Convert the screen shot to a condensed graphic file (.jpg or .gif).

Changing the store folder can result in deleting all files in the old
folder.

Importing is NOT done by manually moving DBX files into the store folder!

Your PC time is off by +12 hours -- very confusing.

If, when importing, you do not see Bill's mail or the other folders try the
following.

Create a new Local Folder in OE for test purposes (Test)(drag any message
into this folder).
Restart Outlook Express
Rename Folders.dbx in the desktop folder to Folders.old.
Go to the current store folder.
Copy Folders.dbx to the desktop Outlook Messages folder.
Rename Bill's mail.dbx to Test.dbx

Try importing the messages from the new Test folder (Test.dbx) in the
desktop folder.

1. Start Outlook Express, click Import on the File menu, and then
click Messages to start the Import Wizard.

2. In the Select Program dialog box, click Outlook Express 6 as the
e-mail program to import from, and then click Next.

3. In the next dialog box, click Import mail from an OE store
directory, and then click OK.

4. Locate the temporary location of the .dbx files, and then select
the files that you want to import (Test). Outlook Express should begin to
import the old mail and create or populate folders.

the last thing you wrote about making a test folder in OE and then changing
the name of the backup folder to test worked. I was about to give up.
Thank you all very very much for your time, especially time and frank. I
know it must be frustrating giving directions on something that you cannot
see yourself.

I do havve one final question. If I have to do this again what is the
easiest way to export or back up my email messages so i can easily import
them to a new system?

thank you again

Hi Bill,

You can save a copy of selected folder DBX files and the file Folders.dbx,
or save a copy of all the files in the message store. A quick test exercise
will confirm that the messages can be restored.

Hi.

Yes, there are a lot of backup programs to backup OE messages.
You may use our ABF Outlook Express Backup for example.
Trial version allows you to backup Outlook Express messages for free. You
can download it here:

I have the same problem. .dbx files on a floppy, no folders.dbx; trying to
get them into OE. I have tried everyone's suggestions and still nothing. I
tried the help link that is listed here. I've tried just importing them;
obviously not. I tried to create a new identity, which includes many steps;
still nothing. I really need these files, what else can I do?

Try this:

Open Outlook Express and create new, local mail folders and call them 1, 2,
3, etc. until you have the number you wish to import. Make sure to open
each new folder one time before closing Outlook Express. Make certain that
Outlook Express is closed before doing the following.

Now go to your floppy disk and rename the dbx files on there as 1.dbx,
2.dbx, etc. Make certain the file properties are not set to Read-Only
(right click and select Properties to check and clear the Read-Only
attribute box if needed). Use Windows Explorer to navigate to your Message
Store Folder. (You can find the location under OEs menu,
Tools/Options/Maintenance and Store Folder button). Copy your 1.dbx to the
message store folder where you will get a note that 1.dbx exists and do you
wish to overwrite it. Repeat as necessary with 2.dbx, 3.dbx, etc. Now you
can open Outlook Express and your messages should show in folders 1, 2 and
3.

Thank you, Jim, you're a genius!!!!!!!!! This worked!! Sorry it took so
long to get back, but I did have a little problem. I have been working at
this for a few days and I almost tried what you suggested, but when it asked
if I wanted to overwrite, I paniked and said no. So I now have 2 folders in
the store called the same thing (except one of them has a (1) behind it) and
I don't know which one to delete, so I'm leaving them alone!

Again, thank you!!

The one with the (1) is the one OE is using. You can verify this by looking
at the Last Modified date and time.

Note: You can use DBXtract ($5) to extract any messages that are in it.
DBXtract ($5): http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx
There is also a free alternative to DBXtract, though not for DBXpress:
http://www.insideoe.com/resources/tools.htm#macallan
I've never used the last one.
