using 98se, oe6.0. i was trying to transfer messages from my shopping folder
on machine running xp, to my 98se machine, as per
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/tips/archiving.htm
i saved file as directed onto a floppy from xp machine. opened file in 98
machine, moved messages into the shopping folder on 98. the messages that
were there in shopping folder on 98 went blank. the messages from the
transfer viewed. i must have messed up the dbx folders. i removed the
account. exported the account info on xp machine to floppy. imported the the
info into the 98 machine, but i still cannot receive messages. i tried
sending to self. the xp still sends receives ok. i tried deleting the
foldersdbx & shopping dbx from the 98 machine. reimported the account info.
still cannot receive messages on the 98.
can someone help?
thank you, len kiesling

update-i can send /receive messages from both machines ok! i was viewing
inbox wrong-oldest messages on top. in my panic, i deleted the messages in
shopping folder. they are in the delete folder. ther are about 20 blank, &
the ones i transferred from xp machine. i set up the same email accounts in
both machines. the xp leaves the messages on server for 5 days. now my
question would be: is there a way to get the blank ones back? i still have
the foldersdbx & shoppingdbx files in recycle bin.

Easiest is to use the method at this link to get shopping.dbx back.
http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/how.htm#importdbx
Or you can try using OE menu, File/Import/Messages/OE6/From a Message Store
and point to the folder containing the old folders.dbx and shopping.dbx,
selecting only the shopping.dbx file but do not just copy/paste them back
into your message store folder or you may not like the consequences.

Hi Leonard,
The messages in the shopping.dbx file can be imported.
As Jim said, including both the shopping.dbx and Folders.dbx in a desktop
folder should allow you to import the shopping.dbx message files.
An alternative approach when the old Folders.dbx file in not available is...
First, create a folder in Outlook Express with the same exact name.
Drag any message into the folder. The folder will now be recognized by the
new Folders.dbx file when OE starts.
Now, import from the old, recovered shopping.dbx file messages after placing
the old shopping.dbx file in a new desktop folder.
Select this folder only when importing.
The file Pop3uidl.dbx records messages that have been downloaded. If the
file is renamed or deleted a new file will be created. Any messages left on
the server will be re-downloaded.
1. Click Exit on the File menu to quit Outlook Express.
2. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
Include hidden files and folders.
3. In the Search for files or folders named box, type Pop3uidl.dbx,
and then click Search Now.
4. Under Search Results, right-click the Pop3uidl.dbx file, and then
click Rename.
5. Type Pop3uidl.old, and then press ENTER.
6. To start Outlook Express, click Start, point to Programs, and then
click Outlook Express.

thank you for reply! the old foldersdbx & shoppingdbx are in the recycle
bin. if i restore them they will go back into the message store folder. i
see that i can select "cut" in recycle. should i cut the old shopping folder
& put in in a folder i can work from, or paste it back into message store?
i'm confused with link info
"Create a new folder in Outlook Express named "temp". this part no problem.
"Copy any message into the new Temp folder." the blank messages are now in
the deleted folder in OE. should i copy the blank ones into my new temp
folder from delete folder?
"Close OE and rename "Temp.dbx" in your OE store folder." this part no
problem.
"Now copy the *.dbx to be imported into the store folder and rename it to
"Temp.dbx". problem here:
does "*.dbx" mean my old shopping folder? it is currently in re-cycle. i
cannot copy from recycle. i could cut, place in a folder, & copy it, (my old
shoppingdbx folder), into the message store folder (where the other dbx
files are?)
then you had advised:
"do not just copy/paste them back into your message store folder or you may
not like the consequences."
"rename it to "Temp.dbx"." this part no problem.
i was going to try:
"OE menu, File/Import/Messages/OE6/From a Message Store point to the folder
containing the old folders.dbx and shopping.dbx, selecting only the
shopping.dbx ", but when i went thru the steps, the options state:
"import mail from an oe identity", or "import mail from an oe store folder"
not sure what to select & if old shoppingdbx should be moved out or recycle,
in order to select it. it seems that the "import mail from an oe store
folder" is the choice, but not sure what follows if selected.

Hi Leonard,
Cut, and then paste the files into a new desktop folder. Navigate to this
folder when importing from Outlook Express.

Hi Leonard,
From what I've seen there is little hope for finding the missing parts of
the 0 byte messages. DBXtract or DBXpress (more advanced) are two programs
that can be used to find stray DBX files on the hard drive. Results vary.
Import Messages (There will be an opportunity to choose what to import
instead of all folders/messages. In this case it does not really matter.)
1. Start Outlook Express, click Import on the File menu, and then
click Messages to start the Import Wizard.
2. In the Select Program dialog box, click Outlook Express 6 as the
e-mail program to import from, and then click Next.
3. In the next dialog box, click Import mail from an OE store
directory, and then click OK.
4. Locate the temporary location of the .dbx files, and then select
the files that you want to import. Outlook Express should begin to import
the old mail and create or populate folders.
Steve Cochran's DBXtract
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx
Cost is $5.

Try cutting/pasting into a new folder on your Desktop.
When you create the temp folder in Outlook Express, all you really need to
do is open it once, then close it and Outlook Express both. Now go the
folder on the Desktop and rename shopping.dbx to temp.dbx and copy/paste
temp.dbx into your message store folder where it will overwrite the existing
one. If you fail to open the temp folder at least one time in Outlook
Express, it will not be created in your store folder which is why the
original recommendation was to put one "junk" message into it, just to
ensure the user actually opened the folder so that it would be created in
the store folder.
The import function will probably not work unless you can cut/paste the
files into a local folder on your Desktop. Then when importing, select the
OE6/From a Message Store and point the wizard to the folder on your Desktop.
Good luck.

thank you for all the help. the messages are gone. i tried the ways
suggested, except for the "Pop3uidl.dbx " method. the messages left on
server is set up on the xp machine. the 98 does not leave messages on
server. the ones i needed were not in inbox.
the blank messages were deleted (out of the deleted folder!!) by a household
member while i was away from machine. i will survive without them.
what is the best way to copy messages from one machine to the next? same
email accounts on both.
i tried the floppy way, & i messed things up. when i first tried, i
transferred only one email, as directed in:
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/tips/archiving.htm & that message went into
folder with no problem. then i tried to transfer another with remainder of
all messages, as an .eml file, about 460k. as they were installing into
folder, drop & drag all, as per link above, the new ones loaded fine, but
the ones that were there previous turned into blank messages. hind site: i
should have made a temp folder which was empty before the large transfer. &
create a .eml file with the original messages as a back up. it's not as bad
as i thought when it first happened. especially since i was not viewing my
test messages i sent myself at first.
thanks for all your help! len kiesling

You're welcome, Leonard.
It is possible to drag (or group drag) messages from OE folders to create
free standing .eml files, and then transfer these to another machine.
Another way is to import message store .dbx files. These files are
compressed -- not needing the full .eml file package. The e-mail accounts
involved are not critical.
These links should provide a better understanding of moving messages.
