OE6 still not remembering passwords

Hi there,
I would really appreciate anyone's help. I've just changed Hard Drives &
used Outlook Express Freebie Backup to move the messages, internet accounts,
etc. but unfortunately, Outlook Express 6 is refusing to remember any server
passwords.
I've tried all of the below that are relevant to me (Win XP/OE6) but none
seem to work. This (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=264672) in particular
- I have deleted one key (only 1 identity on here) but still to no avail. I
set Outlook to remember in the accounts section, but does nothing still as it
will remember them for that session, but once OE is closed - it forgets all
my passwords
Any clues at all please?

Try this one:
When using sysprep.exe, passwords cannot be saved:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=815229
Since you only have one identity, chances are that it's the default 'Main
Identity' which is much more prone to corruption than a user-created Named
Identity. Try one or more of your mail accounts in a new Named Identity
(File>Identities>Add new identity). Assuming all is well, import messages
from the old Identity before deleting it (File>Identities>Manage
Identities).
General OE Caveats to Avoid Problems:
Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.
Empty Deleted Items folder daily.
Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.
Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Hi Rob,
Thanks for your help. I've tried deleting the keys in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage Provider as stated in
that, & previous fixes - one with some data in was able to be deleted, but
one (practically empty) cannot be deleted. It just says "error while deleting
key".
I've turned off Kaspersky's e-mail checker, but I'm not sure whether this'll
help at all!
Any other info/things to try would be greatly appreciated.

As suggested earlier, create a new identity (File>Add new identity) and set
up one or more of your mail accounts in it then poll the server for messages
(hit Send/Receive button). If all is well (i.e., your password(s) is/are
remembered, import messages from the old identity and then delete it.

Hi Rob,
Unfortunately, a new OE identity does still not remember the passwords. The
only way I *think* I can get it to remember them is by adding a new Windows
user and setting it up that way. But of course, that's pretty much like a
whole new computer installation as I'd have to re-install everything again.

Any further help would be greatly appreciated!
I've done a full (data wiping) system restore using the HP system recovery
partition it creates - and STILL it's not remembering them. Suggests to me
that it leaves the registry intact.
The only option now is a complete format & to go through the installation
procedure again.

See if PW is remembered in a new User Profile, Leo.
If all is well, see:
How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151/
If not, then I'd suspect hijackware and/or Trojan infection.
