I just installed sp2 for xp pro. ever since then, outlook express asks me
which identity to launch, even though I have checked the box that indicates
which indentity to use when starting the program. what can I do to help
outlook express remember?

Are you fully up-to-date at Windows Update?

One of your current Identities may be damaged, especially if one is the
default Main Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named
Identity (File>Identities>Add new identity). Assuming all is well, import
messages from the old Identity before deleting it (File>Identities>Manage
Identities).

To avoid such corruption in future:

Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Wow, yes I am fully up to date with all the updates. But you could have
something there with a corrupt profile idea. I use PC-cillin internet
security. do you really think that I'm not getting any protection against
email bugs by using this product?

Does the behavior persist in a new Named Identity?

The combination of the default Main Identity and email scanning by
anti-virus app has indeed been known to cause problems.
