IE history

Hi,
Is it possible to save and copy all my websites that I have visited in the
history file to a floppy disc then delete the history on the pc? At a later
time I would like to put the history back onto the pc again.
The reason for me wanting this is because I will have other people using my
pc temporarily and I don't particularly want them to see which web sites I
have been surfing. But after they stop using my pc I would like to be able
to surf my old websites again.
If it is possible, where is the file located and how do I go about doing it?
Thanks so much in advance.

Windows version?

Have you considered password protecting your Windows Profile instead and
having other users log on using a restricted Guest account?

I have windows xp. I want to be able to use my pc at the same time as my
guests, showing them everything and anything on my pc except for my
websurfing history.
So can I just cut and paste the histoy file and then add it after my
visitors have gone?
I can't really add the history to my favourites as my history goes back
nearly one year and it would take me a month of sundays to add it all.
Thanks for the reply, any other options that I can do?

Are we talking about the same thing? You can only maintain History of
visited websites for a maximum of 99 days, Katie (IE Tools>Internet
Options>General>History>Days to keep...).

In any event, no, you can neither export nor import History; Same applies to
AutoComplete data.

I've never heard of cutting/pasting data in C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Local Settings\History as a workaround, no.

WOW ... my history goes back 48 weeks!
For some reason I am able to keep it for all these weeks. Thats great for
me!
Yes I am sure it is the same history that we are talking about, I knew it
was kept there, but it don't see individual websites and contents similar to
those kept in favourites. They must be kept as a data file or something.
Thanks for your response.

yes, mine is up to almost 2 years and I decided to see if I could save them
as you wanted to do, and take them off my computer. So I did find the
history folder in the Windows folder, and copied it to floppy discs. It
took quite a few (this computer can't copy onto CDs.) But I'm not sure yet
if I deleted them off the computer, if I would be able to put them back on
later from the discs.

so as of yet you haven't managed to put it back onto the pc? I would be
interested to know if you did it successfully. Do you know how you got to
keep so much of that history?

the only thing I can think of is possibly mine is an older version that
allowed more history, and when I upgraded IE, the history folder remained
unchanged. (I am definitely no expert, as you can tell!:-)(lol). Under my
Internet tools>Options>General>History>Days to keep, I have a choice that
goes up to 999 days. Right now I am at 98 weeks.

I have been afraid to delete history off the pc, because I'm not sure if I
can put it back with the discs and I too like to keep it. I will try to put
it on another computer and see what happens and let you know. Were you able
to find your history folder in the windows folder? (I hope I'm not
breaking some newsgroup rules in this conversation since I'm no expert!!)

I have xp and I have found the folder but there are sub folders too. Not
sure which one to copy.
As for breaking newgroup rules, well I don't think we are as maybe this will
benefit others who will read these postings. And if you can offer help to me
or any one else then that must be exactly what the news groups are for.
Many thanks for your imput, I am very grateful to you.

Katie, Karestton and anyone else who sees this behavior, what size
(right-click > Properties) is your History folder (in WinXP, C:\Documents
and Settings\Username\Local Settings\History)?

IE Tools > Internet Options > General > Temporary Internet Files > Settings

In my history properties it says 27.3mb.
IE temp internet settings 893mb.
Have we turned off something somewhere that should delete the history after
a certain amount of time?
Thanks for your input and help... much appreciated
Katie

Thanks.

No, that's not why I asked. In your case, "If it ain't broke, don't fix
it."

> Thanks for your input and help... much appreciated

YW. Thanks for helping with my little investigation.

Simply as a comparison, my machine is configured to save History for five
(5) days, my History folder is 2.6MB. My Temporary Internet Files (TIF) are
set to a max of 50MB.

In case you're wondering (I was), icreasing the max TIF does not allow me
more days to save History, which has a default max of 99 days.

The size of my history folder is 8.64 MB. Amount of disc space to use in
Temp Int Files is 278 MB. I use Windows 98 Second Edition and my option
goes up to 999 days. My computer at work with ME goes up to 999 days, and
my other computer at work with XP goes up to 99 days.

Katie, I did not get a chance to try copying those History files from the
discs to my computers at work yet. My 2 computers at work use ME and XP and
my computer at home uses Windows 98 Second Edition, so I am not sure if
that will cause a problem or not. But I still want to try--it may be a few
days though before I can, so I didn't want you to think I forgot!!

Yes, it would appear that the 99 day default I was referring to is WinXP-
(and possibly -Win2K) specific.

Thanks for your feedback.

PA Bear, yw.
Katie: Well, I did not have any luck getting the saved folders back onto
the computer (I tried deleting just one sub folder which represented 2
weeks, and then putting back on from the floppy disc, and that did not work,
and it did not work to try to put the saved folders onto another computer)
But this did work to keep the history from being accessed: I renamed my
Windows/History folder (I renamed it History Original) and then opened and
used Internet explorer. The weeks in history were all listed as always but
they would not open. When I went back to Windows, a new history folder had
been created. I renamed this folder History 2, and put the name of History
Original back to History. Then when I went back to IE, the weeks in history
would open again. So maybe if that would work in your operating system, that
would be a good way to keep your history off limits temporarily. I have
Windows 98 second edition, as I said. These links that PA Bear sent (one is
copied below) were very interesting--did you see them? Also see part of
what was said under the History Inspector Link. The writer mentions using
a backup of the history folder--I think he must mean copying the file using
the renaming method possibly, so you would have 2 copies in Windows if
something happens to one.

http://groups-beta.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie5.browser/browse_frm/thread/a81e46dbf5aa675a/d39f6a7fa023f975?q=export+OR+import+%2B+history+group:microsoft.public.*&rnum=17&hl=en#d39f6a7fa023f975

http://www.wbaudisch.de/HistoryInspector.htm includes the following:
Special requirements regarding new system versions:
Under Windows ME and later, history folders that are not listed in the
Registry can be deleted automatically. Therefore, caution must be exercised
if selective view of history is wanted only temporarily. Always make a
backup of the complete history folder before using the History Inspector.
The weekly folders that are excluded and removed from the Extensible Cache
key in Registry by this program can be deleted from the history folder
automatically by Windows . If the complete history must be restored later,
only the backup can provide these folders again.

FWIW I have always thought that the default was 20 days.
(That's what I still have.)

OTOH a cursory look at my History.IE5 folder shows *some*
MSHist* directories going back over 2 years.

E.g. in a cmd window enter:

cd /d %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\History\History.IE5
tree
tree | find /i "MSHist" /c
dir/ad
dir/ad | find /i "MSHist" /c

My counts are 38 and 54. It is pretty evident (e.g. just considering
the time span in weeks) that neither list is in any way complete.

The difference in the two counts suggests that 16 of the subdirectories
are inaccessible by tree for some reason. Based on my 20 days I would
expect there only to be a maximum of 9 in use which could perhaps explain
why tree might not be able to list them. In fact, tree does not list the latest
ones (6). So now I have to find 10 more which dir/ad lists but tree doesn't... ;/

It's simple (though tedious) to put the two lists side by side
and do an eyeball compare. Better procedure for more
extensive lists would be to make them both comparable
by FC. E.g. use tree /a and dir/ad/b and then
modify the former to remove tree's ASCII prefixes, etc.
completely.

Specifically:
tree /a >treea.txt
dir/ad/b >diradb.txt
notepad treea.txt (to make the list have the same format as diradb.txt and save it)
fc treea.txt diradb.txt >diffs.txt
notepad diffs.txt (to list only differences and save it. See below.)

In any case comparison of the two lists doesn't show me
anything conclusive about the ones that tree misses.
At first I thought they might only be directories created
for weekly summaries but I have examples of both types
in my difference list.

Aha! I saved and edited that list so I could use attrib
on them and found that they are all marked with the System
attribute (S) and of course the in use ones are also marked
that way.

BTW here are the two commands I used to do those tests:

for /f %d in (diffs.txt) do attrib %d

for /f %d in ('dir/ad/b') do attrib %d

In conclusion then, it looks as if in my case at least, any "extra"
History beyond my 20 days has been accumulating by accident.

YMMV
