Me too <g>. But the last time I was involved with an incident with
this ISP (sympatico.ca) it did not seem to require SSL for SMTP
but might have required it for POP3, which, if I am interpreting OP's
description correctly, may be where the main problem lies. <EG>

The only explanation I have for this thread's Subject: given that
statement is that perhaps he got sidetracked by a new symptom
when he tried testing with the E-mail address he tried to give us.
<LOL>

Hmm... according to this he needs both checked (but not using
the default port 465 for secure SMTP.)

http://upgradecentre.sympatico.ca/FAQGuide.aspx?p=FAQ_GOE

(Google web search for
SMTP POP3 site:sympatico.ca
)

But I don't think that that is likely to be right either because
(as I remarked before) telnet works normally with that port:

<extract>
telnet smtphm.sympatico.ca 25

(apparently it is in BC)

So checking SSL was probably an error.
</extract>

He's using the old (!) web interface to newsgroups so we can't
tell if he is even using an IP address from his ISP (which perhaps
would account for the need to use authentication on an SMTP
connection); otherwise I suspect we would have seen more incidents
of this type before. <eg>

FWIW
