Lately I have been getting error messages whenever I start OE without first
going online. OE does not start, and if after a long pause I click again,
the message crops up along the lines of 'OE cannot open because there is
already an instance of OE running.' If there is, it isn't visible. A
restart cures the problem. I have 1.1 broadband and XP SP2, and have not
had the problem before over the last ten years. I clear my cache daily, and
keep the space requirement for OE to a minimum. Nothing has changed other
than that I have had a couple of MS updates recently, and Norton has blocked
a couple of trojans, or so it claims. Any thoughts, anyone, please?

START | Run
type in regedit
and press ENTER
Press the + sign next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Press the + sign next to Identities
Press the + sign next to {USER_ID} (which is the Identity)
Press the + sign next to Software
Press the + sign next to Microsoft
Press the + sign next to Outlook Express
click on 5.0

Look at the Compact Check Count
If it's at 100 or above, it may be compacting in the background when you
closed it last.
Double click on this value and change it to 0 (zero)

Some of the AV software could be causing this as well. Turn off email
scanning and see if it stops as well.

Other may come in and post some other ideas.

Thanks for the response. It was set at 12(18), but I changed it to zero,
which can't do any harm, I imagine. OE has been compacting rather a lot
lately. I'll give it a few days before trying the AV disable. The other
possibility is the two or three updates from MS in the last week or two.
