i have been able to simple click on a header, using outlook express and, if
there was an image attached, it would simply open in the body.

for some time now (possibly with sp2???), the attached image requires that i
click on the attachment and have it open in a separate window.

is there some setting that has changed that allows an image to open in the
body of the message?

Two places to look. OE menu, Tools/Options/Security and check whether or
not you can open/save attachments. Also on the same sheet, look at the
Block images and handling of external links.

In Outlook Express in Windows XP SP2 or Windows 2003 SP1, the following features do not
work when Tools, Options, Read, Read All Message In Plain Text is selected (For a quick
workaround for the current message, press ALT+Shift+H)
- Displaying attached images at the bottom of the message window
- Visited Links changing colors
- Right click a Link and select Add to Favorites, Copy Shortcut or Save Target As
- Dragging a Link from the message to IE or another program
- Unscramble (ROT13)
- View, Text Size
