Not enough information..
- What type of system? (Name brand, self built, laptop/desktop, etc.)
- Updated drivers? Updated BIOS?
- Did whatever doesn't work ever work?
- What changed/when did you notice it stopped working if it used to work?
Based off the extensive information given thus far:

I have also (personally) seen this happen on systems with bad hardware..
Essentially it LOOKS like it went into standby, but it really crapped out.

If the power light is blinking on your computer just press the power button
quickly. It will bring the computer out of S3 sleep mode.
