i had to do a system recovery nondestructive and now i noticed that the icon
that used to appear in the taskbar when i received mail in outlook is not
appearing. is there away to fix this?

In Outlook, go to Tools -> Options -> Preferences tab -> E-mail options
button -> Advanced e-mail options button. Verify that "Show an envelope icon
in the notification area" is checked.
