IEXPLORE, KERNEL32.DLL & 018f:bff9db61 Error
Sparky Watts

I get the 'IEXPLORE invalid page fault/kernel32.dll' error message if I close
down the "last" internet window to the desktop before disconnecting or if I
disconnect and then close down the internet window and go back to the desktop.
I've tried the I/E repair and that didn't fix it. I reinstalled IE6 SP1 and
the updates but that didn't fix the issue.
What files might be corrupted or what areas[registry?] should I investigate?

Windows version?
You may need new video drivers. Check the website of your video board or
computer manufacturer. Meanwhile, you can do the following:
1. Use the default mouse pointers.
2. Turn down your color depth. (Right click the desktop and choose
Properties | Appearance | Settings) Some people find that increasing color
depth helps.
3. Turn down your graphics hardware acceleration. (Start | Settings |
Control Panel | System | Performance | Graphics button) You will see
little, if any, performance degradation.
4. Turn off your desktop wallpaper.
If these make the problem go away you need new video drivers.
Also check your system for "hijackware":

Update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From now on,
do both daily.

I'm running Win98se. Your step 2, I don't see an item called 'color depth'
under Settings. Can you explain what I should look for? I have been running
Zone Alarm Pro and Norton's A/V software with updated definition files.

Try 'color quality' instead.

I uninstalled the Nvidia drivers, rebooted the system, reinstalled the
drivers and rebooted the system but still when I close the 'final' window or
disconnect window first after being online, I still get the IEXPLORE error.

The video driver cause was just a guess based on frequency of occurrence
with this symptom. These days I suspect crashes in the kernel (even at the
magic BFF... addresses) are just as likely to be symptoms of malware.

I've run Adware, with the latest 'defs', and it found nothing. How do I
restore/rebuild the "kernel" to which you refer?

Have you missed the point?
There is very likely nothing wrong with your kernel.
The problem would be caused by interference with modules which call it
by third-party programs which have hooked into them or otherwise
caused incompatibilities in the call stack.
PA Bear gave you more suggestions than just Ad-Aware (I assume you mean.)

I've started investigating the sites you mention and will download the
HijackThis and CWshredder however I did find this site
[http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/Darnit.htm] no longer functional.
