i like to keep my photos stored in the microsoft my pics folder ( i have
windows xp) but my cannon photo album software called 'Zoom Browser' has a
lot of pictures in it which i would like to take out from there and put in
the 'my pics' folder.

please would you be able to advise a novice exactly how to locate the files
of the individual photos in stored Zoom browser and then move them to the my
pics folder. many thanks for any assistance.

Simple

Open zoom browser, the pictures are listed with the file name
underneath (e.g. 110_1098.jpg). Write down one of the file names then
use Explorer to locate that file, you will hopefully find the other
files there too. Then move them all to "My Pictures"
