Problem w. Back button - Help!

When I click on the Back button in certain Web sites I get the "Page Cannot
be Displayed" message. In other sites, it works as expected.

The problem is recent.

For example, I get this problem on Amazon and the B&H Photo sites, while the
KB site for Microsoft works just fine. So I haven't been able to see a
pattern as to which Web sites function normally and which don't.

I had done some fairly severe Registry pruning, but restoring all the pruned
registry entries that seem to reference IE hasn't solved the problem.

I could try re-registering DLL's, but have no idea how to determine which
ones are relevant to IE.

System is IE6, WinXP SP2, with all current updates except the current MS
virus-specific detector, as I have Norton Internet Security.

The only article I could find in the MS KB that seemed relevant made
reference to an undated winint.dll. But the winint.dll on my machine is a
much later date than the one referenced.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi,
Are you using the HOSTS file from http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm or
another source? There's information on the Back button problem on that page.

Also try:
Clear out the Temporary Internet Files. IE> Tools> Internet Options>
General> Delete files (and delete offline content.) It's often recommended
that the TIF folder be kept at about 50-60 MB (Settings.)

Internet Options> Security> Internet Zone> Custom> Userdata persistence>
Enable.

Internet Options> Advanced> uncheck "Do not save encrypted pages to disk"

Internet Options> Privacy... are you allowing cookies?

Try disabling (briefly, as a test) any ad-blocking or privacy programs that
are running.

Enable the Windows firewall and disable NIS to see if some feature of NIS is
causing this.

Hope this helps,
Don

Don, thank you! The problem was solved by clearing out the TIFs. I do this
on a regular basis, but apparently not regularly enough!
