Windows XP loosig internet

This is a long story. In 2002 I bought a new computer and had to reload the
windows XP system about every three months. In February of this year I had
to replace the Mother board, essentually resulting in another new computer.
I reloaded the same windows XP on the new computer and it lost program
menues, system sounds, and several other troubles resulting in the computer
operating about three days before it had to have the c drive formatted and
the system reloaded.

I had an upgrade of windows XP which I had on a computer running windows 98
at the time. I loaded that version of windows on the computer and upgraded
all of the Sp2 and critical upgrades. That system ran perfectly for a month
and a half without any failures. I had the store who sold me the computer
give me a new Windows XP whch included Sp2 on the CD. I loaded that system
on the computer because of a virus notification and I find that the computer
loosed the internet DSL connection if I let it stand for a period of time.

I could only conclude from ths that something is going wrong with the newer
CD's of windows XP.

I am running Norton Sstem Works 2005, Zone Alarm provessional, and Lafasoft
plus adaware.....

Am I doing something wrong. Each time the internet is restored if I restart
the system.

Does anyone have any kind of an answer???

Thanks

Well that still doesnt tell me how your modem is connected to your PC.
Ethernet or USB
1) When the PC loses connection, what do you modem status lights
indicate?
2) Your PC, Hardware Devices, your connection Device (Ethernet or USB)
what do properties show for the device.
3) Your PC, Network & Dial up connections, what does it say for your
device?

It is connected by a DSL Modem by ethernet cable

One more symptom. Iam using Mozilla Firefox and IE Explorer. Mozilla
Thunderbird is the email program. When this happens the email progra
(Thunderbird) is able to connect but neither browser is able to connect to
the internet. It seems to be something going on with the operating system

So you don't actually lose the connection, its just certain software does.
If so its likely a configuration problem with your software, its unlikely to
be the o/s if you can connect with your email app.
