IE 6 - Some inoperative links

Win XP Pro & IE 6

As an example, at the NY Times web site, about 50% of the links are
inoperative and result in
"The page cannot be displayed" when clicked on.
However, when I right click on the link and select "Copy Shortcut", and then
paste the shortcut in the URL Address Window, I gain access to the web page,
with one exception. Exception: If I had previously (unsuccessfully) tried
to access the page by clicking on the link, I must first go to another web
page before pasting the link in the URL address window in order to
successfully gain access to the web page.
Any suggested solution to the problem are appreciated.

I should have mentioned in my post that I am using Sprint DSL and the
computer is wired (not wireless) through a router.
