IE freezes when viewing page
Leonard F Kiesling

using win 98se, dell xpst-450 desktop, 5+ yrs old. pentIII, 450mhz, 384 ram,
13 gig drive, I.E. 6.0.
i have have a problem where I.E. will freeze when viewing some web pages.
only way out is alt-ctl-del, & manual push restart button. alt-ctl-del, does
not always work. problem is occassional & intermittent.
i wasn't able to duplicate the problem until now.
I.E. freezes when i view 2 web pages referred to by microsoft newsgroup:
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress
the post:
HUGE "Inbox.dbx" folder but no email messages shown - please help
Monday, May 09, 2005 6:36 PM
the links referred in one of the replies are:
http://www.insideoe.com/problems/bugs.htm#mailgone
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm
if i click on either link from the mail message, ie opens to the page; only
partially loads, then machine freezes. i tried other referred links in
message, & had no problems. i don't want to keep trying the freeze up links,
because alt-crl-del doesn't always work.
i haven't located other links that cause this problem. i will keep track of
my surfing, & if another link is found, i will write it down.
this link, which has been in my favorites, is no problem:
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/store.htm
any input gratefully appreciated!
thank you, len kiesling

Both links worked fine when I accessed them from your post. It may be that
the underlying URLs in the post you have been using got corrupted in
transmission.

Len, if you disable NAV (IIRC you're using it) does the problem persist?

pa i cannot thank you enough for looking in! very unusual problem!
i unchecked "reuse windows for launching shortcuts" no change. complete
freezeup.
i disabled norton 2002 AV, no change.
i tried repair i.e., in add remove. no change
tried reset web settings. no change
i have a similar machine at home along with this one. on that machine, i can
go to sites listed with no problem! same 2002 NAV, spybot, spywareblaster,
links to aumha in favorites lol!,
so far as i can tell, it's only some on the sites on this page that causes
freezeup when i click them:
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/problems/
i had tried other sites from news messages, links on web pages, searches
with google, various normal-routine web surfing, all pages view fine.
i researched this problem, but did not come across any similar.
it's not really a big problem, i can live with it for now. it's just that
something's not right.
what if my "default.css" file is missing from c:\windows folder? it was
quarantined 10-15-03 by norton AV. i still have it there. could that missing
file cause these web pages to freeze machine upon opening? i'm trying.......
thank you, len kiesling

Len, I wouldn't loose to much sleep over this. IIRC the links that give you
problems are ones which I've posted elsewhere (e.g.,
http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#storemain).
Are you now stating that if you go instead to
http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm and click on the link 'How OE stores
files on your hard disk', the behavior persists/is the same?
(You wouldn't be the first who had problems with the coding Tom used on his
recently redone pages.)
I'd guess that DEFAULT.CSS isn't related to your problem. You'd normally
find several DEFAULT.CSS files in Temporary Internet Files, Len.

thank you for reply!!!
went to:
http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm
no problem.
went to:
"How OE stores files on your hard disk"
no problem.
my problem seems to be limited to the sub-links found on this page:
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/problems/
i am so glad you commented that others had problems with coding tom used.
strange, my other win 98se machine no problems.
machine in all other respects seems fine! (thanks to you! & others)
i have never done re-format. machine purchased oct 99. don't know if i'd try
myself, or send out to computer shop. i can call dell for directions too.
thanks for spending your time answering my post! very grateful!

Partially loads or partially renders? E.g. use the TIF viewer to see
if bugs.htm is there. If so you could try loading the page from the cache
while offline. E.g. first press Alt-F,W before trying to use your link.
(Note: TIF viewer == Alt-T,O,Alt-S,V + Alt-V,D + Alt-V,I,LastAccessed)
Hmm... that page has some Google ads in it. Is that the problem?
E.g. do you have an ads scraper active which may be corrupting the
page's script? Instead, you could use the Custom Level... Security
options for this zone. E.g. change any setting which is currently Enable
temporarily to Prompt and reply Yes whenenver it causes a prompt when
you are testing a page. Doing that and disallowing Active Scripting when
prompted also avoids a request to go online (which only occurs to refresh
the ads). Tip: doubleclick on the security zone icon in the Status bar
to open the Security options dialog.
You could also try overriding the .css settings with ones of your own.
E.g. using the Options, Accessibility, User style sheet overrides.
Unfortunately, these seem to be only overrides and do not offer the
possibility of ignoring all the settings being made by the page's style sheet
unless you have a replacement value for every one that the page's style
sheet makes. Note: this is a guess from empirical knowledge; somebody
who actually does webpage design may have better information about
how it really works or can be exploited.
Alternatively, also using the Accessibility dialog, you could see if your
symptom changes by turning off all the other formatting options.
The page's .css file still is read from (according to the TIF viewer)
but presumably has no final say in the rendering of the page.
Note: Accessibility dialog == Alt-T,O,Alt-e
Good luck

thank you for reply! i would say page partially loads. if i go to this page:
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/problems/
no problem viewing. if i select a link under "problems", the machine
freezes.
i have not tried each link, since i'm trying to avoid manual restarts. at
this point, i have been willing to just leave machine as is because of the
manual restarts needed to return machine back to operational. it's only
those sub-links that cause the freeze up. so far, haven't found any other
web pages that cause it. have similar win 98se machine. views the web pages
fine. i use that machine if i feel the needed to view mr tomsterdam's info.
i don't believe i have an ad scraper. use spybot, adaware SE, norton AV
2002, spywareblaster. have the same programs on other 98se machine.
i'm not following the TIF info too well, but i will keep reading the info
you sent .
i wanted to thank you for your time in replying to my post. i really
appreciate it!
thank you, len kiesling
