[Uncle John]

Recently I get this for some but not all https URL's. I can open them with
Firefox so there is likely something wrong with my IE browser settings. They
are banking\credit card sites; I access the log in OK but then when the
browser attempts to open the secure site I get that message.
I have done all that I can think of to enable access including

> Emptied the Hosts file
> Put the delinquent sites in Trusted Zone
> Temporarily disabled the firewall
Still cannot access the sites. What more should I do?

Thanks for your help and I have followed all the steps but I seem to have
particularly difficult problem.
All secure sites can be accessed with Firefox

Some secure sites cannot be accessed with IE6

Thanks for your message. I have not been able to find any malaware or
parasites despite of the extensive searches explained in your various links.
Since I am able to access the sites denied to IE6 with Fire Fox 1.1 the case
is probably a corruption somewhere in internet explorer. To fix this would
mean doing a repair install of windows XP pro +SP2 and past experience makes
me think it is not worth the risk of causing other problems as long as I do
have a way of getting to the sites

Did you post a HijackThis log to an appropriate forum for review? (Don't
post it here, please.)

You describe classic symptoms of hijackware. Note that this stuff infects
the Operating System (Windows) and your IE problems are only symptoms.
Flattening the box and reinstalling Windows is one workaround, yes, but I
suggest posting your HT log somewhere to let the experts have their say.
Even if you can browse using Firefox, your machine is still compromised.

I did the Hijack analysis and found no infection [I am familiar with the
product]. However researching again the links you gave earlier, I looked at

read it because I thought that it would not cover IE 6 in Windows XP
Professional + SP2.

However I now know that Windows XP Professional + SP2 uses Internet Explorer
6+Service Pack 1

The link shows an extract from Article 84207
This problem may occur when the use of Federal Information Processing
Standard (FIPS) encryption algorithms is enforced through the Computer
Configuration Security Options policy.
I turned of FIPS Compliant algorithms for encryption in the Group Policy
Editor. All secure sites can now be accessed OK.

Thank you again for your help and I hope my result is helpful; the pointer
would seem to be that some (probably non-American https sites) can not use
FIPS where as American banking sites can.

the same problem. I can see some websites but I am unable to see others.

Hi PAB,
thanks for your reply.

Not a single website in the list works.
I ran ADaware and spybot, the fix for winsock, cleared TIF, cleared SSL.
Deleted most of the objects in the TIF.
Also flushed the DNS.

I really tried anything humanly possible. My WinXP was preinstalled so I
really do not know how to fix it without a CD...

use. It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware.
